Stone’s Record Breaking Night Leads Men’s Basketball To 79-65 Victory Over Minnesota Duluth

St. Cloud, Minn. – Senior Scottie Stone stood out in scoring a game-high 29 points, while also breaking the program's all-time three-point career record, in the 79-65 victory by the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (14-7, 10-2 NSIC) over Minnesota Duluth (4-14-3-9 NSIC) on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Halenbeck Hall.
Stone broke the team's previous record of 250 made threes set by David Dreas during the 2008 season with his made triple early in the second half. The three was part of a 29-point effort for the Melrose, Minn. senior. He shot 50 percent from the field (11-for-22) and 50 percent from the line (6-for-12) plus knocked down his only free throw of the evening in scoring 29 points. Additionally, Stone recorded seven rebounds plus four assists.
Junior Jon Averkamp had a career night for the Huskies in putting together efforts of 21 points and 14 rebounds on efficient 10-for-14 shooting from the field. Redshirt sophomore Gage Davis contributed 10 points, five rebounds and four assists. Junior Andy Foley had a steady all-around performance with his seven points, nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Senior Mark Hall totaled four points, four rebounds plus three assists. Sophomore Brindley Theisen scored six of the team's eight points off the bench plus had a steal and two rebounds. Redshirt junior Seth Mortag contributed four rebounds and two assists in his seven minutes of game action.
Minnesota Duluth put four players in double figures led by Charles Benson's 14. Luke Harris scored 13 points, Cody Tomlinson tallied 12 points and eight rebounds with Jake Wilson scoring picking up 10 points plus four assists.
The Huskies shot 45.7 percent from the field (32-for-70) and 34.8 percent from three-point range (8-for-23). The team also shot 7-for-11 (63.6 percent) from the foul line. UMD was limited to 42.6 percent shooting from the field (26-for-61) and only had a 27.6 percent shooting percentage from three-point range (8-for-29). The game features six tied scores and four lead changes. Minnesota Duluth largest lead of the night was a by a bucket at the 11:56 mark of the first half. The Huskies largest advantage was 19 with 2:14 remaining in the contest. SCSU outscored the Bulldogs 10-0 in points off turnover and 22-7 in fast break points. The team led 47-34 at the break and just outscored UMD 32-31 in the second half in the 14-point victory.
The Huskies jumped out to an early eight-point lead, 14-6, in the first half on a Mark Hall jumper at the 15:14 mark. The Bulldogs then fought back to tie the game up at 19 all at the 10:04 mark on a made jumper from Logan Rohrscheib. The Huskies put together a 15-6 run to inch the lead out to nine, 34-25, on a Theisen made three. The lead swelled to 14, 44-30, on made Averkamp jumper with just under three minutes remaining in the first half and SCSU settled for a 13-point advantage on made free throw from Foley just before the horn.
The Bulldogs opened the second half on an 11-2 rally to close to within four, 49-45, on Jake Wilson's jumper with 15:37 remaining in the contest. The Huskies finally broke free and got the lead back to double digits on a made three from Stone, 68-56, at the 6:18 mark to finish off a 19-11 run. The lead stayed above 11 the rest of the way and reached its highest point of 19 points, 79-60, on a Foley's made jumper with 2:14 remaining in the contest.
The Huskies have a tough pair of back-to-back games on the road this weekend. SCSU starts the trip and takes on Northern State (12-6, 8-4 NSIC) on Friday evening, Jan. 20, at Wachs Arena at 8 p.m. The program then takes on MSU Moorhead (15-3, 10-2 NSIC) in a potential battle for sole possession for first place in the division on Saturday, Jan 21, at 6:15 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Hall.
