Men’s Basketball Falls To Northern State, 82-73

Aberdeen, S.D. – Despite 28 points from redshirt sophomore Gage Davis, the St. Cloud men's basketball team (14-8, 10-3 NSIC) fell on the road to Northern State University (13-6, 9-4 NSIC) on Friday night, Jan. 20, at Wachs Arena.
Davis shot an efficient 11-for-19 from the field in scoring 28 points. He also had five rebounds and two assists. He was joined in double figures by three teammates. Senior Scottie Stone tallied 15 points. Fellow senior Mark Hall recorded 12 points and five rebounds, while junior Jon Averkamp totaled 11 points. Redshirt freshman Alex O'Neill had a steady seven point and seven rebound effort off the bench. Junior Andy Foley made an impact with seven rebounds, a block and two steals.
Northern State had five players reach double figures and were led by Logan Doyle's 23 points and nine rebounds. Ian Smith recorded 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Carter Evans has 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench. Jonny Dahl and Mack Arvidson both put up 10 points each.
The Huskies held a slight 45.9 (28-for-61) to 44.6 (29-for-65) shooting edge from the field, but only were able to hit nine threes in 29 attempts (31 percent), missed five of the 13 free throws the team were rewarded and were outrebounded 39 to 35. The Wolves also made their mark at the free throw line in hitting 19-for-24 (79.2) percent plus forced 18 SCSU turnovers. NSU had a dominate edge down low in outscoring the Huskies 46-22 in points in the paint. The game featured four tied scores and six lead changes.
The Huskies got off to fast start and led the Wolves by eight in the first six minutes, 18-10, only to see NSU go on a 35-16 run the rest of the half to take an 11-point lead into the break, 45-34. SCSU fought hard in the second half and twice got the deficit to just one point in the first 10 minutes of the second stanzawith the second time coming on an O'Neill jumper, 57-56. The Huskies kept fighting and finally tied the score up at 65 on a made jumper from Davis with just over four and half minutes remaining (4:32). A 6-0 spurt against put the Wolves up two scores at the 2:35. The closest the Huskies were able to get the rest of the way was four points, 75-71, on another Davis' made jumper with under a minute remaining in the contest. The Wolves then hit eight of their nine free throws down the stretch to finish with the 82-73 victory.
The Huskies continue the road swing and take on first place MSU Moorhead (16-3, 11-2 NSIC) on Saturday, Jan 21, at 6:15 p.m. at Alex Nemzek Hall.
