SCSU rally falls short in 4-3 OT loss at #2/3 Minnesota Duluth

Duluth, Minn. - The St. Cloud State University (10-11-1, 5-8-1 NCHC) men's hockey team managed to comeback from a 3-0 deficit to force overtime, but #2/3 Minnesota Duluth (13-5-3, 9-4-1 NCHC) took advantage of an overtime goal by Kyle Osterberg to gain a 4-3 victory on Friday, Jan. 14 before 7,015 at Amsoil Arena in Duluth.
In a tale of two halves, the Bulldogs controlled the first half of the contest with three unanswered goals to gain a 3-0 lead in the second period. Karson Kuhlmann started the game with a power play marker at 4:04 of the first period. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 2-0 with a goal by Avery Peterson at 9:48 of the first and Dan Moelnaar scored at 4:25 of the second period to make it 4-0.
The Huskies jumped started their game at 5:44 of the second with a goal by Blake Winiecki, who snuck a shot from the far corner along the redline past UMD goalie Hunter Miska. This was Winiecki's 10th goal of the season and it was assisted by Patrick Newell (his team leading 15th assist of the year).
Newell continued the comeback at 9:37 of the second period with a power play marker that was assisted by Jack Poehling and Niklas Nevalainen. The goal was Newell's third of the season and his 18th point of the year. To complete the rally, SCSU sophomore defender Jimmy Schuldt scored a power play goal at 12:33 of the second with assists from Jack Ahcan and Mikey Eyssimont.
The goal was Schuldt's third of the season and it was Essyimont's 20th point of the year.
After a scoreless third period, UMD hit the game winner in the OT session with Osterberg's goal at 2:33 on assists from Moelnaar and Parker Mackay.
In the game, UMD outshot the Huskies 30-26. Jeff Smith started the game for SCSU and played for 24:25 before being relieved by Zach Driscoll in the second period. Driscoll completed the game with 17 saves and one goal allowed, while Smith had nine saves.
On the power play, SCSU was 2-4 and UMD was 1-3 in the game. The Huskies had five penalties for 13 minutes in the game and UMD had six penalties for 23 minutes.
