Women’s Basketball Downs Newman 72-62 on Saturday Afternoon

Topeka, Kansas – Senior Amanda Christianson led the charge with a game-high 24 points in the 72-62 St. Cloud State women's basketball (3-1) victory over Newman University (5-4) on Saturday afternoon, Nov. 25, at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kansas on the second day of the Parrish Hotels Thanksgiving Classic.
Christianson became the first SCSU women's basketball player to record 20 or more points in a game this season. It was her first 20 point plus performance since getting a career-high 26 points against Minnesota Crookston last season (1/7/17). She also had five rebounds and a pair of steals. Fellow senior Andrea Thomas totaled 13 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals. Freshman Tori Wortz recorded 11 points and a pair steals. Freshman Nikki Kilboten picked up six points and three blocks off the bench. Sophomore Jocelyn Johnson led the team for the second time this season with seven rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Brianna Johnson had eight points, three rebounds, two assists and a block.
Newman was led by Hannah Alexander's 26 points. She also had five rebounds. Nia Roberts was the only other Jets player to reach double figures with 17 points. Erica Olerich had a game-high 10 rebounds.
The Huskies shot 44.4 percent from the field (24-for-54), 50 percent from three-point range (7-for-14) and 68 percent from the free throw line (17-for-25). The Jets shot 39.3 percent from the field (24-for-61), 29.2 percent from three-point range (7-for-24) and 70 percent from the free throw line (7-for-10). SCSU also held the edge in both steals (9-2) and in blocks (5-1).
The game featured seven tied scores and seven lead changes. The game was tied at 28 at halftime, but SCSU was able to outscore the Jets 44-34 in the second half. St. Cloud State's largest lead was 12 points with 1:32 to go in the game on the second of two made free throws from redshirt junior Mallie Doucette.
St. Cloud State women's basketball team opens league play next weekend with a trip to take on Minnesota Crookston on Dec. 1 at 6 p.m. and Bemidji State on Dec 2 at 4 p.m.
