St. Cloud State men's hockey drops 2-1 decision against CC

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (16-17-1, 10-13-1 NCHC) concluded the regular season portion of its 2016-17 schedule with a 2-1 loss against Colorado College (8-22-4, 4-16-4 NCHC) on Saturday, March 4 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
In a classic defensive battle, the Huskies scored first in the contest with a power play marker by sophomore defender Jimmy Schuldt at 4:40. Assists on the 5x3 power play goal were credited to Jacob Benson and Dennis Cholowski. The goal was Schuldt's seventh of the season, while Benson now has 10 assists this winter and Cholowski has 11 assists.
To finish out the first period, CC's Branden Makara tied the score at 1-1 at 15:26 of the first period. Alex Berardinell provided the lone assist on the play for CC. Just over a minute later, Colorado College's Matt Hansen posted the game winner with a power play goal at 16:39 of the first. He was assisted on the play by Teemu Kivihalme and Mason Bergh.
The three goals proved to be the extent of the game's offense as both squads player shutout hockey throughout the second and third periods. The Huskies limited CC to just 20 shots in the game as goalie Jeff Smith suffered the loss with 18 saves to his credit. Alex Leclerc faced 26 shots in the game and made 25 saves to earn the victory for the Tigers. On the power play, SCSU was 1-4 and CC was 1-5.
After the contest, SCSU saluted its four seniors as they appeared in their final regular season games of 2016-17. The group of seniors include defenseman Niklas Nevalainen, forward Ben Storm, forward Daniel Tedesco and defenseman Nate Widman.
SCSU finishes the regular season with a fifth place ranking in the NCHC standings. The Huskies will next travel to Grand Forks, N.D. on March 10-12 for the best of three first round series versus North Dakota in the NCHC playoffs. The Fighting Hawks placed fourth in the league standings. In the other first round match-ups, Denver will host CC, UMD will host Miami and Western Michigan will host Omaha.
The winners of the first round series will then advance to the 2017 NCHC Frozen Faceoff at the Target Center in downtown Minneapolis on March 17-18. Tickets for the Frozen Faceoff are available at www.axs.com
