Women’s Basketball Upsets Nationally Ranked Northern State, 61-57

St. Cloud, Minn. – Freshman, Tori Wortz scored 11 points and recorded five assists to lead the St. Cloud State women's basketball team (12-4, 9-3 NSIC) to a 61-57 victory over the #22 nationally ranked Northern State Wolves (15-4, 10-3 NSIC) on Friday, Jan. 19 at Halenbeck Hall.
In a physical and fast-paced thriller at Halenbeck Hall on Friday night, the Huskies prevailed down the stretch to extend their winning streak to six. After falling behind 17-8 at the end of the first quarter, the Huskies only trailed by one point going into half time. After the break, the Huskies gained momentum and out-scored Northern State, 21-11 in the fourth quarter. SCSU was able to capitalize on Northern State's 18 team turnovers and score six points in the final minute of play to seal the upset win.
The Wolves' leading scorer, Miranda Ristau fouled out with less than three minutes left in the contest. St. Cloud State's Brianna Johnson and Nikki Kilboten each also fouled out late in the fourth quarter. There were eight lead changes in the game and St. Cloud State only controlled the lead for five minutes the entire night.
Three of the Huskies' five starters scored in double figures to help defeat the Wolves. Madelin Dammann and Amanda Christianson each scored 10 points while Andrea Thomas scored nine points. Thomas and Mallie Doucette each also recorded three steals on Friday night. The Huskies defense had a stellar showing by totaling 11 steals as a team and four blocks. St. Cloud State recorded 20 of their 61 points off of Wolves' turnovers.
Northern State's Miranda Ristau had a game high of 16 points as well as a game-high nine rebounds in the contest. The Wolves out-rebounded SCSU 37-28 but also turned the ball over 18 times against the Huskies.
St. Cloud State shot 37.9 percent (22 for 58) from the field and 40 percent (8 for 20) from three-point range. SCSU limited their turnovers to nine and outscored Northern State's bench 13-6. The Huskies also recorded 15 second chance points to accompany their 11 offensive rebounds. Northern State shot 40 percent (16 for 40) from both the field and from three-point range (2 for 5). The Wolves also shot 85.2 percent (23 for 27) from the free-throw line.
