#1 SCSU Wrestling advances to semifinals with two wins at NWCA Duals

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team dominated the first day of competition at the 2018 NWCA Division II National Duals tournament in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Jan. 4. The Huskies opened the event with a 46-0 win over #15 Lake Erie College and then punched their ticket to the semifinal round with a solid 32-6 victory over #9 Indianapolis.
In action against Lake Erie, the Huskies impressed from start to finish in the match. Adam Hedin (133), #4 Jarred Oftedahl (141), #7 Kolton Eischens (174) and #10 Lawrence Phillips (285) all gained falls in the match. Jake Barzowski added extra points with a tech fall at 149, while major decisions were added by #2 Brett Velasquez (125) and #1 Larry Bomstad (157). Big wins were also charted by Devin Fitzpatrck at 165 with a 5-4 decision against #5 ranked Nick Vandermeer of Lake Erie, and Brady Nelson, who gained a 4-1 win over #8 ranked Tyler Hughes of Lake Erie at 184.
In the quarterfinals the Huskies took revenge on Indianapolis, which was the lone team to post a dual victory against the Huskies in 2016-17. The Huskies gained a quick 7-0 lead with victories at 125 and 133 by Velasquez and Hedin respectively. At 141, #2 Nick Crume of Indianapolis handed #4 ranked Oftedahl his first loss of the season with a 6-2 decision. SCSU retruned to the driver's seat with a major decision win by #5 James Pleski at 149 and a pin by #1 ranked Bomstad at 157. At 165, #8 ranked Travis Holt added extra points with a tech fall win and Eischens scored a 7-3 victory at 174.
In another upset win at 184, SCSU's Tyree Overton added a 5-3 decision win over #11 ranked Brody Conner of Indy. At 197, #9 Vince Dietz iced the team win with a 9-1 major decision over Indy's Jordan Collins. At 285, Lawrence Phillips suffered a close 7-6 loss against #4 ranked Dylan Faulkenberg of Indianapolis.
The Huskies will now advance in the NWCAÂ DII National Duals bracket to face #12 Nebraska Kearney on Friday, Jan. 5. at 11:00 a.m.
