After helping his team to 2-0 weekend to open the regular season, #4 St. Cloud State University (2-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) senior forward Patrick Newell (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) has been named the Bauer NCHC Offensive Player of the Week.
Â
Newell had one of the best weekends of his career to start the season, totaling five points to lead SCSU to a sweep at Alaska. In Friday's 3-2 victory, he had a hand in all three tallies, dishing out the primary helper on the Huskies' first goal to tie the game. He then scored both SCSU goals in the second stanza to put the Huskies up for good, including his second goal serving as the game-winner on the power play. The two goals and three points both tied career highs. This marked the first time in his career that Newell has earned an NCHC weekly player award.
The next night in SCSU's 6-2 victory over the Nanooks, Newell chipped in two more points, again setting up SCSU's first goal with the primary assist, while also again scoring the game-winner in the second period to break a 2-2 tie. The senior fired three shots on goal in each game, giving him six for the weekend, while he posted a +3 plus/minus, three goals and two assists in the series.
In his career at SCSU, Newell has 20 career goals, 58 career assists and 78 career points in 108 games played.
The Huskies, which earned a #4 national ranking in both NCAA Division I men's hockey polls this week, will continue their 2018-19 season with a pair of home games at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center against Northern Michigan University on Friday, Oct. 19 and Saturday, Oct. 20. Tickets for both games are available at scsutickets.com or by calling the SCSU Athletic Ticket Office at 1-877-SCSTIX or 320-308-2137.
