ST. CLOUD, MINN. - Freshman forward Jenniina Nylund was expecting to travel with her team to St. Charles, MO this weekend, but instead is currently in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The Finnish skater got the call late Sunday that she was needed to fill out the roster for Finland in the upcoming Four Nations Cup.
The Finnish National Team had some last-minute changes that caused the need for extra bodies, and Nylund was happy to oblige. Flying out Monday, Nylund was on the ice playing in the USA vs. Finland game Tuesday, November 6. Finland dropped that game 5-1 to the U.S.
The team took on Sweden on Wednesday and won 3-2. Nylund had an assist on the first Finnish goal at 6:30 of the first period in that game, goal was by Venla Hovi.
Nylund has a familiar face to look for in Saskatoon as St. Cloud State teammate Emma Polusny is on the USA roster as one of their three goaltenders. Team USA has won their first two games of the tournament; 5-1 against Finland and 2-1 against Canada. The WCHA has 30 current or former players representing the elite women's college hockey league at the tournament.
The final games in the Four Nations Cup of U.S., Finland, Sweden, and Canada, will be held Saturday, November 10 at 8:00 p.m. CST.
