#1/2 St. Cloud State rolls to another weekend sweep with 7-1 win over Omaha

The #1/2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (13-1-2, 6-0-2 NCHC) made another strong statement in NCHC play with a 7-1 victory over Omaha (4-10-2, 2-5-1 NCHC) on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory extends SCSU's unbeaten streak to 10 games and it also marks the Huskies' sixth weekend sweep of the season.
The Huskies gained a quick 1-0 lead in the contest with an unassisted goal by Blake Lizotte at 1:19 of the first period. The score stood at 1-0 through the end of the period before Omaha tied the game at 5:03 of the second period with a goal by Zach Jordan. SCSU wasted little time charting the eventual game winner as Robby Jackson netted the Huskies' second goal of the night at 5:38 with assists from Ryan Poehling and Spencer Meier.
The goal was Jackson's sixth of the season and his 97th career point at SCSU. Ryan Poehling now has a team leading 14 assists for the Huskies.
SCSU proceeded to break open the game in the second half of the second period with two unanswered goals. Jack Ahcan scored his second goal of the season at 11:16 with assists from Nick Perbix and Nick Poehling. At 16:58 of the second period, Easton Brodzinski posted his eighth goal of the year with assists from Nick Poehling and Perbix, which gave the Huskies a 4-1 pead.
In the final period, Patrick Newell added his team-leading 10th goal of the year with a power play marker that was assisted by Sam Hentges and Nolan Walker. Blake Lizotte added his second goal of the evening at 12:31 of the third period with assists from Newell and Jimmy Schuldt. This was Blake Lizotte's sixth goal of the year, while it was the 10th assist of the year for both Newell and Schuldt.
Newell now leads the team with 20 points, while Schuldt moved within two points of the SCSU 100-point club with 98 career points. Schuldt's career stats include 33 goals and 65 assists.
To cap the evening, Kevin Fitzgerald made the final tally 7-1 with an unassisted goal at 16:11 of the third period. This was Fitzgerald's seventh goal of the year and his 12th career goal at SCSU.
The Huskies ended the game by outshooting Omaha 37-21. On the power play, SCSU was 1-of-3 and the Huskies were 3-of-3 on the penalty kill.
David Hrenak was the goalie of record for SCSU with 20 saves in the contest. His season record now stands at 10-0-1, which factors out to be a .955 winning percentage in 2018-19.
The Huskies will now take a break for the upcoming holidays and will return to action on Dec. 27 with an exhibition game at the HBNHC against the U.S. National Team Development Program U-18 squad.
