Men’s Basketball Takes on Southwest Minnesota on Monday in Semifinals of NSIC/Sanford Health Men’s Basketball Tournament

Sioux Falls, S.D. – The St. Cloud State men's basketball team (23-7) continues NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament play by taking on Southwest Minnesota State (23-7) in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Monday, Feb. 26, at 2:30 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in the semifinals of the tournament.

Scouting Southwest Minnesota State

The Mustangs, who are the top seed in the South Division, defeated Augustana by a 79-64 score in the quarterfinals to also improve to 23-7 on the season.
KJ Davis led the team against the Vikings with his 26 points
Turner Moen totaled 18 points, seven rebounds and five steals.
Ryan Bruggeman tallied 11 points and eight assists.
Carter Kirk was steady with 10 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and two blocks.
The Mustangs started the NSIC Tournament with a 78-73 victory over the University of Mary (2/21).
Bruggeman leads the team on the season with his average of 16.3 points per game.
He also leads the squad with his 181 assists and 55 steals
Carter Kirk puts up 15.0 points and 10.4 rebounds per game, while shooting 60.4 percent from the field.
KJ Davis gets 10.9 points per game, while shooting 51.3 percent from the field.
The Mustangs are on a nine-game winning streak and have 13 wins in the last 15 games.
SMSU is averaging 79.4 points per game, while shooting 48.7 percent from the field, 40.7 percent from three-point range.
The Mustangs have scored 80 or more points in 14 games including a season-high of 114 against Crown College.
SMSU is coached by Brad Bigler, who is in his ninth year in charge of the program.

Prior Meetings

The program is 40-21 all-time against Southwest Minnesota State since the start of the series in 1969-70, but have lost the team's last two games to SMSU.
The Huskies lost to Southwest Minnesota State by an 82-59 score at home earlier this season in December (12/9).
Brindley Theisen led the team with 13 points.
Jon Averkamp had 10 rebounds.
Trevon Marshall had 12 points.
Andy Foley totaled 10 points and six rebounds.
The program is 2-0 all-time against SMSU in the NSIC Tournament (W, 68-67 – 2009-10 in the Championship Game and W, 93-83 in the First Round in 2014-15).

Notables

SCSU earned the number two seed in the North Division after going 17-5 overall in NSIC play this season.
The Huskies defeated Sioux Falls by a 67-56 score in the quarterfinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament on Feb. 24.
The win was the first for SCSU in the quarterfinals (second round) since defeating the University of Mary by a 65-59 score during the 2010-11 season in what was the semifinals.
The win improved SCSU to 14-7 all-time in NSIC Tournament play and 47-42 all-time in post-season play.
The win was the first for SCSU at the Sanford Pentagon since the basketball tournament was moved to the venue.
The program has now defeated Sioux Falls in eight of the last nine games.
Junior Gage Davis led the team against the Cougars with his 18 points, 11 rebounds and four assists.
It was his ninth time leading the team in scoring this season.
The double-double was the sixth of the season for Davis and the 30th of his career.
His four assists led the team for the 10th time this season.
The program is 18-4 when Davis plays in a game this season.
Sophomore Trevon Marshall chipped in with 13 points on 6-for-6 shooting against Sioux Falls.
It was his fifth game in double figures this season, but his first since also scoring 13 against Minot State (12/30).
Four of the five times that Marshall has scored in double figures this season it has been 13 points.
Junior Brindley Theisen recorded 11 points including two threes against USF.
The double figure performance was his 21st of the season in 30 games.
Theisen has now scored in double figures in seven straight games and in nine of his last 10 games.
Junior Sean Smith picked up 10 points and four blocks against the Cougars.
The game was Smith's 20th in double figures this season.
His multiple block performance was his 21st of the campaign.
Senior Jon Averkamp scored eight points with seven rebounds plus two blocks and steals.
The game was only the fifth time this season where Averkamp has been held below 10 points.
Senior Andy Foley came off the bench to pull down seven rebounds.
It was the most rebounds for Foley since he had eight rebounds against the University of Mary (12/31/17).
The team shot 49.1 percent for the game (26-for-53).
It was only the third time in the last 14 games that the program has been held below 50 percent shooting.
The team's 67 points in a win was the lowest for the program in a victory since also getting 67 points in a 67-51 win over Mayville State in early November (11/11/17).
The 56 points allowed by the team was the least amount allowed since giving up 56 to Concordia-St. Paul in early February (2/2/18).
It was the 10th time that SCSU has allowed an opponent to score less than 60 points (10-0 record).
The program was outrebounded by the Cougars (45-31).
It was only the ninth time that the program has not held a rebounding edge (4-5 record).
The program has won 12 of its last 13 games and has four players averaging in double figures in that stretch with Davis leading the team in both scoring (18.8) and rebounding (7.8), while also shooting 48 percent from the field.
Six players on the have played in all 30 games this season with three (Averkamp, Theisen and Smith) starting all of them.
The team's 17 league wins this season tied the school record set by the 2013-14 team.
The 23 wins on the campaign this year are the most since the 2009-10 team won 29 games and eighth time since the 2004-05 that the program has won 20 or more games.

If the Huskies defeat SMSU on Monday, Feb. 26, they will advance to the championship game of the NSIC Tournament for the first time since 2010-11 when they lost to Winona State, 58-51.
The team would face the winner of N1 Northern State and S2 Minnesota State at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27.
The program is 29-15 all-time against Northern State since the start of the series in 1959-60 including a split of the two games this year.
