Men’s Basketball Falls To Southwest Minnesota State, 73-66, In Semifinals of NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament

Sioux Falls, S.D. – Despite getting 20 points and eight rebounds from junior Gage Davis, the St. Cloud men's basketball team (23-8) fell to Southwest Minnesota State (24-7) by a 73-66 score to fall in the semifinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
Senior Jon Averkamp totaled 15 points and three rebounds. Junior Brindley Theisen recorded eight points. Sean Smith picked up eight points and four blocks. Junior Adam Heede-Andersen picked up five assists.
Southwest Minnesota State was led by Ryan Bruggeman, who had 28 points, five rebounds and five assists. Cameron Kirk picked up 19 points and 12 rebounds. Turner Moen had 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Huskies shot 50.9 percent from the field (27-for-53), 27.8 percent from three-point range (5-for-18) and 70 percent from the free throw line (7-for-10). The team also had 20 rebounds, 16 assists, six steals and five blocks. Southwest Minnesota State shot 50.8 from the field (30-for-59), 54.5 percent from three-point range (6-for-11) and 87.5 percent from the line (7-for-8). The Mustangs had 35 rebounds, 13 assists, six steals and one block.
St. Cloud State trailed at half 39-31. The team held a slight 35-34 edge in the second half. The game featured five lead changes, but no tied scores. The Huskies largest lead with two points twice. SCSU fought back and started the second half on a 11-2 run to take a 42-41 lead only to see SMSU go on a 13-2 rally to take control of the game.
St. Cloud State men's basketball team will now await word to see if the program receives an at-large bit to the NCAA Division II Tournament.

- The program has still won 21 of the last 26 games.
- Gage Davis, with 20 points against SMSU, has now scored in double figures in 22 of the 23 games that he has played in this season.
- The team is 18-5 when Davis plays this year.
- The team's 23 wins on the campaign is the most since the 2009-10 season when that program picked up 29 games.
