#2 St. Cloud State men's hockey sweep #10/11 Western Michigan

The #2 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (17-3-2, 9-1-2 NCHC) pushed its latest win streak to three games with a 5-3 victory over #10/11 Western Michigan University (13-8-1, 6-5-1 NCHC) on Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, Minn.
The victory marked SCSU's seventh weekend sweep of the season and it moved the Huskies' home record in 2018-19 to a perfect 10-0-0. SCSU also maintained its hold on first place in the NCHC with a 9-1-2 record. The Huskies have 30 league points after the weekend sweep over the Broncos, while Minnesota Duluth is in second place with 22 points.
Western Michigan opened the contest with a goal at 8:55 of the first period by Dawson DiPietro with a solo assist from Colt Conrad. The period ended with the Broncos owning a 1-0 lead, but the Huskies did manage to hold a 13-6 edge in shots on goal.
In the second period, SCSU quickly established an edge as Blake Lizotte scored at :57 with an assist from Jack Poehling. SCSU then added three unanswered goals to take control of the contest.
At 6:17 of the second period, Easton Brodzinski scored his 10th goal of the season with a power play marker. Assists on the play were posted by Jimmy Schuldt and Blake Lizotte. Micah Miller then added his second goal of the weekend with his tally at 11:32 of the second period with helpers from Jack Poehling and Nick Poehling.
The eventual game winner was scored by Nolan Walker on the power play at 19:16 of the second period with assists from Sam Hetnges and Jack Ahcan.
In the third period, Jade McMullen scored at 12:02 to pull WMU back within two goals at 4-2. Jack Poehling iced the contest at 17:54 with his empty net goal that made the score 5-2. Ryan Poehling and Jack Ahcan each had assists on the play, which was Jack Poehling's fifth goal of the year. In the closing minute of play, WMU made the final score 5-3 with Lawton Courtnall's goal at 19:23.
In the game, SCSU outshot WMU 37-18. On the power play, SCSU was 2-of-6 and the Huskies were a perfect 3-of-3 on the penalty kill. David Hrenak earned his third consecutive victory in the nets with 15 saves. His season record now stands at 12-2-1.
The Huskies will return to action on Jan. 25-26 with a pair of key NCHC battles at the University of North Dakota.
