The St. Cloud State University soccer team (6-3-3, 5-2-2 NSIC) pushed its current winning streak to three matches with a 3-2 victory over NSIC rival Winona State (5-8-0, 4-6-0 NSIC) on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Husky Stadium in St. Cloud, Minn.

The victory moves the Huskies into a tie for fifth place in the NSIC standings with Mary and Wayne State (17 points apiece). Next weekend, the Huskies will continue their NSIC schedule with key league matches at Sioux Falls on Oct. 25 and Southwest Minnesota State on Oct. 27. SCSU will then travel to Minot State on Nov. 1 before returning home for the final regular season home date on Nov. 3 against Mary.

In the match against Winona, the Warriors gained an early lead in the contest with a goal by Georgette Topalis at 5:45, which included an assist from Kendyl Keay. SCSU then tied the contest with a penalty kick goal by Kaitlyn Dziubinski at 17:23. A red card call on the play to Winona State's Katie Timmons set up the penalty kick after the SCSU player was taken down on a shot attempt near the WSU goal. The red card call put Winona State one player short throughout the remainder of the game. This was Dzuibinski's second goal of the season for the Huskies.

The Huskies then nabbed a 2-1 lead with goal by rookie forward Jenna Dominguez at 28:16. She started the play with a steal from the Winona State goalkeeper and converted the turnover into her third goal of the 2019 season. She now has 3g/2a this season for eight points and ranks second on the SCSU scoring charts behind team leader Claire Shea, who has 10 points (4g/2a).

St. Cloud State then notched the game winning goal with a shot by Brooke Bares at 35:42. She was assisted on the scoring play by Emma Van Donselaar. This was Bares' second goal of the season and it was Van Donselaar's first assist of the year.

Winona State managed to close the gap in the second half with a goal by Ellie Wardell at 67:12, before the SCSU defense played shutout soccer for the remainder of the contest.

In the nets, Zoe Welsh improved to 6-3-3 with the victory that included five saves. The Huskies set the stage for the win by outshooting WSU 12-3 in the first half and finished the game with a 16-8 shot margin against the Warriors.

Next up for the Huskies will be a 6:00 p.m. game at Sioux Falls on Friday, Oct. 25, followed by a 1:00 p.m. game at Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall, Minn. on Sunday, Oct. 27.
