NSIC Release
BURNSVILLE, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University volleyball team has made headlines all season long, so it should come as no surprise that the team continued to do so during postseason awards season. The Huskies saw four individuals honored by the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Thursday afternoon, as Clara Krenz (Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul), Linsey Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn. / Maple Lake) and Maddy Torve (Loretto, Minn. / Heritage Christian Academy) all earned All-NSIC honors. Additionally, Krenz repeated as the NSIC Libero of the Year while Chad Braegelmann was named the NSIC Coach of the Year in just his fifth year at the helm.
Krenz, Rachel and Torve are the first trio of Huskies to earn All-NSIC honors since Lisa Greve, Laurie Meyer and Becky Stream achieved the feat back in 1983 when the conference was simply the Northern Sun Conference (NSC). Krenz and Rachel are the first student-athletes to receive First Team All-NSIC honors since St. Cloud State rejoined the conference in 2008, while Torve was named Second Team All-Conference after putting up career numbers as the team's setter.
Braegelmann is the first volleyball coach to receive the NSIC Coach of the Year award and the first to win a conference Coach of the Year honor since 1995, according to available records. In just five seasons, Braegelmann has led the Huskies to new heights, turning the program from an NSIC bottom dweller into a conference contender. In 2019, he led St. Cloud State to its best overall and conference record since 2004, as the team enters the final week of the regular season with an overall record of 21-5 and a 13-5 mark in NSIC play. Braegelmann also helped the Huskies earn their first national ranking since 1997, thanks in large part to their six wins over nationally ranked opponents including conference wins over Minnesota-Duluth and Concordia-St. Paul.
Additionally, St. Cloud State boasted one of the top defenses in the NSIC and the nation, thanks in large part to Braeglemann and Krenz. The senior became the first player in program history to repeat as the NSIC's Libero of the Year and was named First Team All-Conference after a stellar season in the back row. A three-time NSIC Defensive Player of the Week this year, Krenz led the conference in overall digs and digs per set from the get go and only got better as the season progressed. Entering the final weekend of the regular season, Krenz leads the NSIC in digs (379) and digs/set (5.57) and ranks tenth in aces (22) and twelfth in aces per set (.32) against conference opponents. Additionally, the senior recorded 20+ digs in 12 NSIC matches and broke the school record for career digs (2116) in mid-October.

Rachel did not suffer a sophomore slump in her second season with the Huskies, as she earned First Team All-NSIC honors after being named the conference's Rookie of the Year one season ago. In fact, the sophomore outside was once again a huge part of St. Cloud State's success as she was an offensive forced to be reckoned with thanks to her 4.04 kills/set and 275 kills in conference play this year, ranking top-10 in the conference in both categories. While Rachel was the team's top offensive weapon, she might have been even better defensively for the Huskies. Rachel was the highest ranking non-libero in the conference in digs/set this season, racking up 262 digs in NSIC play for an impressive 3.85 digs/set average. She was also a threat behind the service line, as her 23 aces rank seventh in the NSIC entering the final weekend of conference play.
Torve received NSIC honors for the first time in her career Thursday afternoon, as she landed on the Second Team after a breakout season for St. Cloud State. The junior setter piloted the Huskies offense to a .219 hitting percentage and 13.78 kills per set in conference matches, both of which ranked in the top-10 in the NSIC, while putting together impressive numbers as an individual. Torve ranked in the top-3 in the NSIC and top-5 in the nation in assists/set throughout the season, as her 1113 assists and 11.83 assists/average ranked third in the conference entering the final weekend of the season. Torve is also the first Husky to record 1000+ assists in a single season since 2008.
St. Cloud State will conclude the regular season this weekend, as the team travels to take on #16 Winona State and #21 Upper Iowa. The Huskies will take on the Warriors in Winona, Minnesota at 6 p.m. on Saturday before traveling to Fayette, Iowa to play the Peacocks at 2 p.m. Saturday.
