LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY – It was a big weekend for the St. Cloud State University volleyball team. In the final weekend of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play, the Huskies earned two huge victories over #16 Winona State and #21 Upper Iowa, concluding the regular season with an overall record of 23-5 and a 15-5 mark in conference play. On Monday, St. Cloud State was awarded for its outstanding weekend, as the team moved to #7 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division II Top-25 poll released Monday afternoon.
There was quite the shake up in the top-10 rankings this past week, as the Huskies 842 votes propelled them ahead of both Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota-Duluth. In fact, St. Cloud State is the second highest ranked team from the Northern Sun in the top-10, as only Northern State ranks higher at #4 after a 2-0 weekend of its own.
The NSIC continued to maintain eight teams in the top-25, with four ranked in the top-10. The Golden Bears and Bulldogs tied for #8 in the latest version of the rankings, joining the Wolves and Huskies in the upper echelon of Division II. Wayne State (#12), Winona State (#15), Southwest Minnesota State (#18) and Upper Iowa (#19) were also ranked in the AVCA's top-25 this week.
St. Cloud State's #7 ranking is the highest for the team this season, as it was previously ranked #8 twice during 2019. The ranking is also the highest the Huskies have received since 1996, when they were ranked #3 and #6 in the nation early in the year.
Though the regular season came to an end this past Saturday, St. Cloud State's season will continue, as the team travels to Sioux Falls, South Dakota to face the #12 Wildcats in the opening round of the NSIC Tournament this upcoming Friday. The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. at The Pentagon and more information, including full game notes and a preview, will be available in the upcoming days.
