11/19/2019 3:44:00 PM | Volleyball
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – For the first time in program history, the St. Cloud State University volleyball team is headed to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) tournament.
Yes, the Huskies will be headed to The Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, for the first time in program history, as they were one of eight teams to qualify for the NSIC Tournament this past weekend. Thanks to comeback wins over #16 Winona State and #21 Upper Iowa last weekend, St. Cloud State finished the regular season with a 15-5 mark in NSIC play, good enough to clinch the #4 seed in the conference tournament. The team's first round foe isn't about to make things easy, as they are forced to face #5 Wayne State College, one of the few teams that handed the Huskies one of their five losses this season.
The NSIC Volleyball Tournament will take place November 22-24 at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. As the #4 seed, St. Cloud State will "host" #5 Wayne State at 5 p.m. on Friday, November 22 in the first match of the second session. The winner of the match will advance to play either top-seeded Northern State or #8 Upper Iowa at 7 p.m. on Saturday, November 23. If the Huskies were to advance to Championship Sunday, they would face either Minnesota-Duluth, Concordia-St. Paul, Winona State or Augustana at 3 p.m. on November 24.
Tickets for the NSIC Tournament are available online at www.ticketmaster.com or by visiting the Pentagon Ticket office. Standard admission is $20 per day, while student tickets cost $10.
Live stats and video will be available for St. Cloud State's opening round match against the Wildcats, while score updates will be made on the team's official Twitter page (@SCSUhuskies_vb) for those who cannot make the trek to Sioux Falls. For more information regarding hotels, a full tournament schedule and seeding can be found at www.northernsun.org.
Here are the five things to know before this NSIC matchup:
4th – Thanks to wins over the Warriors and Peacocks last week, the Huskies finished the regular season with an overall record of 23-5 and a 15-5 mark in NSIC play. The 15 NSIC wins are the most for St. Cloud State since the team joined the conference in 2008, but its finish among the team standings is also significant. The Huskies finished in fourth place in the overall conference standings, the highest they've ever finished in the NSIC. However, it's also the highest St. Cloud State has finished in any conference standings since 1996, when the team finished fourth in the North Central Conference (NCC).
7 – Seven of the eight team to qualify for the NSIC Tournament were ranked in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) top-25 this past week, a testament to how tough the conference truly is. In addition to the Huskies, who were ranked #7 in the latest version of the poll, three other teams were ranked in the top-10, including #4 Northern State, T-#8 Minnesota-Duluth and T-#8 Concordia-St. Paul. Wayne State stayed steady at #12, while #15 Winona State and #19 Upper Iowa moved up a few spots. In fact, Augustana is the only team to not crack the top-25 at least once this season, though the Vikings did receive votes in the latest version of the poll.
3-0 – St. Cloud State and the Wildcats faced off just once this season, and things did not go the Huskies way. In fact, Wayne State handed St. Cloud State one of its only straight-set losses this season, as the Wildcats dominated en route to their 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-19) victory over the Huskies.
10 – Historically, St. Cloud State has struggled against Wayne State, as the team is just 1-9 in its last three meetings against the NSIC foe. However, the Huskies lone win came in dramatic fashion, as they swept the #18 Wildcats 3-0 (25-12, 25-16, 25-23) for St. Cloud State's first win over a ranked opponent in nearly 20 years. Current seniors Marah Mulso (Marshall, Minn. / Marshall) and Clara Krenz (Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul) led the way for the Huskies, as they led the team with 11 kills and 17 digs respectively.
44/36/6 – Sophomore standout Linsey Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn. / Maple Lake) will be key to St. Cloud State's success this weekend, as she continues to make headlines for her outstanding play this 2019 season. After a rookie year to remember, the sophomore outside certainly did not suffer the standard sophomore slump, as she led the team in kills (405), kills/set (3.97) and total attack attempts (1034) throughout the year. It might be her climb up the record books that is far more impressive. In 16 matches against regionally and nationally ranked opponents this season, Rachel recorded 14 double-doubles and recorded 10+ digs in all 16 matches. Thanks to those numbers, Rachel now ranks eighth all-time in double-digit kill matches (44), fifth in career double-doubles (36) and sixth in 20+ kill matches (6).
