St. Cloud State wrestling rolls to 42-0 victory over SMSU

The #2 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (4-0, 1-0 NSIC) opened its 2019 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season with a big 42-0 victory over Southwest Minnesota State University on Wednesday, Nov. 20 in St. Cloud, Minn. at Halenbeck Hall.
Before a large Military Appreciation/Youth Night crowd, the Huskies dominated the match from start to finish as SCSU charted three falls on the night along with three major decisions to earn the league shutout.
The evening opened with a 16-3 major decision victory at 141-pounds by SCSU's #11 Garrett Aldrich over SMSU's Justin Sampson. In the second match of the night, #2 James Pleski posted a 5-2 decision win over Robert Shields of SMSU at 149-pounds.
In action at 157-pounds, #1 ranked Jake Barzowski gained win number three for the Huskies with a 10-3 decision over SMSU's Nathan Moore. At 165-pounds, SCSU's #4 Devin FitzPatrick gained the Huskies' first pin of the night with a fall at 1:58 over SMSU's Kevin Bostwick.
At 174-pounds, #3 Kolton Eischens added another pin to his records with a 2:30 fall over SMSU's Hayden Voxland.
As the Huskies opened the second half of the match, SCSU's #7 Tyree Overton charted a 7-4 decision over SMSU's Cole Hennen at 184-pounds. Noah Ryan extended the Huskies' lead with a 13-4 major decision win at 197-pounds over SMSU's Ben Thompson before rookie Ezayah Oropeza added a 5-4 decision victory over SMSU's Andrew Petersen courtesy of a key riding time point.
To close the evening, freshman Robby Horsman continue his impressive SCSU debut with a 1:53 fall over SMSU's Patrick Baumgartner at 125-pounds, and #3 Garrett Vos finished the tally sheet for SCSU with a 12-2 major decision victory over SMSU's Brock Buyse at 133-pounds.
The eight-time defending NSIC champions and the two-time defending NCAA DII national champs, SCSU has now won 52 consecutive dual matches and is just two wins away from tying the team's current record of 54 consecutive dual wins from Jan. 30, 2011 to Jan. 12, 2014. SCSU's last dual loss was against Indianapolis on Jan. 14, 2017. On the topic of streaks, SCSU has not lost a conference match since Jan. 27, 2001 against Augustana and the Huskies have not lost a home dual match since Feb. 14, 2010 against Upper Iowa.
SCSU will continue its 2019-20 season on Dec. 7 with a trip to the Buena Vista Open in Storm Lake, Iowa. SCSU's next dual meet will take place on Dec. 13 at Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D.
