INDIANAPOLIS, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University volleyball team is no stranger to making history this year. On Wednesday, the team made just a little more, as the Huskies received their first Regional ranking since 2004. In one of the toughest regions in college volleyball, the St. Cloud State was ranked fifth in the initial NCAA Central Regional Rankings released early Wednesday afternoon.
The top-8 ranking is a first for the Huskies since the 2004 season, which, coincidentally, was the last time the team qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The team was also one of six from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) to earn a spot in the initial Regional Rankings, which also included Minnesota-Duluth (No. 2), Concordia-St. Paul (No. 3), Northern State (No. 4), Wayne State (No. 9) and Winona State (No. 10).
The NSIC, Great American Conference (GAC) and Mid-America Athletics Association (MIAA) make up the NCAA Central Region, which includes 39 women's volleyball teams located throughout the Midwest. The top eight teams in the region will advance to the Regional Round of the NCAA Tournament, which will take place December 5-7 at a yet to be determined site. The conference tournament winners will earn an automatic birth to the NCAA Tournament, and the other five spots will be rewarded on an at large basis.
This is the first of three NCAA Regional Rankings that will be released throughout the remaining weeks of the regular and postseason. St. Cloud State will look to solidify its place amongst the top-8 this weekend as it hosts (RV) Minnesota State and No. 6 Concordia-St. Paul in the final two home matches of the regular season.
