Huskies Rout The Mustangs 74-56 On the Road

MARSHALL, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team outscored Southwest Minnesota State University 37-15 in the last 15 minutes of the game to win 74-56. The Huskies defense contained the Mustangs while the offense flourished. SCSU improves to 5-3 (2-2 NSIC) after tonight's' victory. The Mustangs fall to 5-4 (0-4 NSIC) after dropping their matchup with the huskies.
St. Cloud State shot 30-of-60 for 50 percent from the field as a team. From beyond the arc, SCSU shot 5-of-13 for 38.5 percent. The Huskies got to the free throw line 13 times and converted 9-of-13 attempts for 69.2 percent.
Katrina Theis (So., F, Maple Grove, Minn.) led both teams in the scoring category with 21 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field. Theis also added seven rebounds, four assists, and two blocks.
Madelin Dammann (Sr., G, Waconia, Minn.) tallied 14 points on the night on 5-of-11 shooting from the field. Dammann dished out two assists and tacked on two steals as well. Nikki Kilboten (Jr., Eau Claire, Wis.) recorded her first double-double of the season. Kilboten scored 12 points on 6-of-13 shooting and collected 11 rebounds.
The Mustangs shot 18-of-68 for 26.5 percent from the field as a team and went 10-of-28 for 35.7. SMSU shot 10-of-11 from the charity stripe for 90.9 percent.
Offensively, the mustangs were led by three players that scored double digits. Erin Baxter and Meleah Reinhart both had 13 points with similar shooting numbers from the floor. Jenna Borchers added 12 points with all of her points coming from beyond the arc.
Tori Wortz (Jr., G, Hutchinson, Minn.) got the Huskies on the board with a layup after SMSU scored the first points of the game. St. Cloud State and Southwest Minnesota State went back and forth during the first quarter until the Mustangs went on a small 8-4 run to make the score 16-12 in favor of SMSU.
Kilboten scored the first four points of the second quarter to tie the score at 16. At one point the Huskies went on a 16-3 run in the second quarter to extend their lead to 28-19. After the Mustangs called a timeout, they went on a 10-0 run to take a 29-28 lead. After a last second shot attempt by Wortz, Cailyn Peterson (Jr., G, Lakeville, Minn.) corralled the offensive rebound and put it back up to give St. Cloud State a 30-29 lead going into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, it took a little over one minute for both teams to score. After a foul, Theis got to the line and made 1-of-2 free throws to make the score 31-29. A few plays later, Reinhart drained a three for the Mustangs to give them a 34-33 lead. Southwest Minnesota State took a 44-37 lead over SCSU with just over four minutes left in the third quarter. The Huskies ties the game at 46 on an old fashioned three-point play from Theis. Dammann capped off the 10-0 run with a last second three-pointer to gives the Huskies a 49-46 lead heading to the fourth.
A free throw from Peterson and a layup from Damman gave the Huskies an early 52-46 lead in the fourth quarter. Two huge three pointers from Theis and Peterson helped extend the St. Cloud State lead to 68-53 with three minutes left. St. Cloud State beat Southwest Minnesota State 74-56.
