Huskies Fall to Minnesota-Duluth on the Road In NSIC Opener

DULUTH, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team fell on the road to the University of Minnesota-Duluth in their much anticipated NSIC opener. The Huskies stayed in the game, going back and forth with the Bulldogs until a few minutes in the fourth quarter when UMD pulled away and took their largest lead of the day which was 15. SCSU ultimately lost 71-59.
The Huskies fall to 3-2 (0-1 NSIC) after today's loss. Minnesota-Duluth improves to 4-3 (1-0 NSIC) after winning their conference opener.
SCSU was led by Nikki Kilboten (Jr., F, Eau Claire, Wis.) led the team with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Kilboten also made 4-of-4 free throws and added four rebounds. Tori Wortz added 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting, Wortz also made two three pointers and tallied two assists.
The Huskies shot 21-of-50 from the field for 42 percent, and an impressive 9-for-15 for 60 percent from downtown. At the charity stripe, St. Cloud State drained 8-of-12 free throws for 67 percent. SCSU also outrebounded UMD 34-33.
UMD shot 24-of-47 for 42.1 percent from the field as a team, and 6-of-15 for 40 percent from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs created separation at the free throw line by knocking down 17-of-21 for 81 percent.
Leading the way offensively for Minnesota-Duluth was Brooke Olson with 20 points and eight rebounds. Right behind her was Katie stark with 15 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.
St. Cloud State tied the game at 12 with 2:51 left in the first but the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to close out the first quarter. The Huskies took their first lead of the day with a few minutes left in the second quarter but UMD caught up and pushed their lead to 29-26 going into halftime.
SCSU spent the rest of the game just a few big shots away from taking the lead until UMD jumped out to their biggest lead of the game. With just under a minute of play left, SCSU found themselves down 71-56. A Caitlyn Peterson (Jr., G, Lakeville, Minn.) three pointer made the score 71-59 as St. Cloud State's rally came up short.
The Huskies will be back in Halenbeck Hall Fri., December 6 to take on UMARY at 5:30 p.m. and Sat., December 7 to take Minot State at 3:30 p.m.
