
#1 St. Cloud State on the road to Omaha for NCHC games on Feb. 22-23

The #1 St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (21-4-3, 13-2-3 NCHC) will return to the road on Feb. 22-23 with a pair of NCHC games at Omaha (9-17-2, 5-12-1 NCHC) in Omaha, Neb. Both games will start at 7:07 p.m. and the games will be played at the Baxter Arena.

IN THE POLLS: The Huskies received a #1 ranking in the USA TODAY/USA Hockey weekly poll. In the USCHO.com poll this week, the Huskies earned a #1 ranking. Â

LAST TIME OUT: The Huskies enjoyed its final by week of the season on Feb. 15-16. The last time SCSU played, the Huskies scored a 2-2 OT tie against Colorado College on Feb. 8 at the HBNHC. SCSU completed the weekend set against the Tigers with a 5-4 OT win on Feb. 9. In the tie game, Nick Poehling and Jack Poehling had goals for the Huskies in regulation. The game went into the records as a tie but SCSU gained the extra league point with a 3x3 OT goal by Ryan Poehling. David Hrenak was the goalie of record with 23 saves...to complete the weekend, SCSU rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the third period to earn the OT win. Sam Hentges and Robby Jackson had first period markers for SCSU before Nick Perbix and Patrick Newell had goals in the third period to tie the game. In the OT session, Newell carded the GWG with assists from Jackson and Ahcan. Of note, Ahcan had three assists in the game. Jeff Smith earned the win in relief with 11 saves. SCSU hit a season game-high with 48 shots on net in the game.
ALL-TIME LEADER: SCSU senior Jimmy Schuldt is now the team's all-time lead for points by a defenseman with 108. Schuldt now has 36g/71a for 107 points. He moves past Kelly Hultgren, who had 28g/79a from 1991-95. Schuldt is the team's all-time leader for goals by a defenseman with 36 and power play goals by a defenseman with 19 during his career...on the topic of Schuldt, he currently leads all NCHC blueliners with 25 points (8g/17a) this season. He ranks 12th in the nation with .89 ppg among DI defensemen.
AHCAN ON POINT: Jack Ahcan leads the NCHC this season with 22 assists (.79 apg) and he also leads NCHC defenders (along with Jimmy Schuldt) with 25 points (3g/22a). Of note, Bret Hedican (1990-91) and Ethan Prow (2015-16) pace SCSU's blueliners for assists in a season with 30 apiece. Jimmy Schuldt had 28 assists for SCSU in 2017-18.
NATIONAL LEADERS: The following is a rundown of where the Huskies rank in the current NCAA stat categories:Â Power Play - 11th (23.2%), Offense - 2nd (3.82 gpg), Defense - 9th (2.14 gapg), Scoring Margin - 4th (1.68 margin), Winning Percentage - 1st (.804), Penalty Kill - 6th (87.0%).
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Huskies are 13-0-1 at home this season and 14-1-1 in games played in the state of Minnesota. Of note, SCSU's best record at home in a single season was a 14-1-3 mark in 1993-94. SCSU was 16-3-1 at home in 2001-02 and 16-3-1 at home in 1996-97. In addition, SCSU was 16-3-2 at home in 2017-18 and 13-3-0 at home in 2013-13. On the road this season, SCSU owns an 8-4-2.Â
AWARD WINNERS: Patrick Newell was named the NCHC Offensive Player of the Week on Jack Ahcan was named the NCHC Defensive Player of the Week on Feb. 11. Newell had 2g/2a and scored the OT GWG vs. CC on Feb. 9. Ahcan posted four assists during the weekend series against CC. Newell's 4-point game on Feb. 9 was a new career game-high for the senior from Thousand Oaks, Calif.
GOALIE NOTES: David Hrenak ranks second in the nation with a 81.0% win rate this season (16-3-2). He also ranks 17th in the nation with a 2.21 GAA. Teammate Jeff Smith is 5-1-1 this year with a 1.83 GAA.
RANKINGS: In the all-important Pairwise rankings, St. Cloud State and UMass received the top spot with a 58 apiece. In the KRACH DI rankings, SCSU was rate #1 with a rating of 498.2. Of note, SCSU has gained 13 NCAA bids since 1989 and the Huskies have advanced to NCAA tournament play five times since 2013 (2018, 2016, 2015, 2014 and 2013).
HOW LOW CAN YOU GO: SCSU has allowed just 60 goals (2.14 goals allowed per game) this season in 28 games played. The current team record for fewest goals allowed in a season is 90, which was set in 2015-16 over 41 games (2.20 goals allowed per game).  On the other hand, SCSU has scored 107 goals this season (3.78 goals per game). The Huskies set a team record in 2001-02 with 179 goals scored (4.26 goals per game).

WORLD JUNIOR SPOTLIGHT: Forward Ryan Poehling helped Team USA gain a second place finish at the 2019 IIHF World Juniors. Poehling was voted the MVP in the tournament, makde the tourney All-Star Team and was voted the Best Forward in the tournament. He had five goals and three assists in tournament play (3rd best). Poehling competed for Team USA at the World Juniors in 2018, where Team USA won a Bronze Medal. Poehling joined Mark Parrish (1996 & 1997) as the other Husky who has played in two World Junior tourneys for Team USA. A total of 10 SCSU players have skated for Team USA at the IIHF World Juniors since 1991.

MAVERICK NOTES: Mike Gabinet is in his second season as the head coach at Omaha. He is a 2004 Omaha grad served as an assistant coach at Omaha in 2016-17. He played college hockey at Omaha and played eight seasons of pro hockey in North America and Europe...the Mavericks own a 9-17-2, 5-12-1 NCHC record this year...SCSU is 22-10-2 in the all-time series against Omaha and 4-0-0 against Omaha at the Baxter Arena and 9-6-1 vs. UNO at the HBNHC...the series started on Jan. 9, 1998 with a 2-1 win by the Huskies in St. Cloud, Minn...SCSU is 5-0-0 in the last five outings against the Mavericks and 9-1-0 in the last 10 games against Omaha...earlier this season, SCSU posted a 2-0 and 7-1 sweep at the HBNHC on Dec. 7-8, 2018..The Huskies were 4-0-0 against UNO last winter with a 7-4 and 5-0 win in Omaha and a 5-3 and 6-2 sweep at the HBNHC in 2017-18...Robby Jackson has 8g/7a and Jimmy Schuldt has 2g/10a scored against Omaha during their college careers...last weekend, Omaha posted a 3-0 win and a 4-2 loss at Miami...Omaha is 2-3-0 in its last five games played...Mason Morelli (18g/12a) and Fredrik Olofsson (10g/20a) leads the Mavs in scoring this season, while Evan Weninger owns a 3.47 GAA and a .903 save rate in the nets for UNO.
