The Huskies head to St. Paul for their second straight and fourth overall conference tournament
ST. CLOUD, MINN. - The St. Cloud State University Huskies (29-4-3, 19-2-3-2 NCHC) are heading down to St. Paul for the second postseason in a row after a 6-3 win and sweep over the Miami University RedHawks (11-23-4, 5-17-2-1 NCHC) in the NCHC Quarterfinals March 16 at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. After a dicey back-and-forth game, four goals in the third period would seal the deal for the Huskies.Â
Miami took the 1-0 lead 6:23 into the first period with a goal from junior Karch Bachman, and the RedHawks maintained their lead into the intermission. SCSU's Easton Brodzinski evened the game at one followed just over a minute later, at 5:55 of the second period, with a goal from senior captain Jimmy Schuldt.Â
Â
The RedHawks evened the score again before the period was over and the teams took the ice for the final period tied 2-2. The Huskies survived a five-minute major penalty during the second period, as well as over a minute of a five-on-three penalty kill. Despite the second period penalties, SCSU outshot Miami 18-9 in the period.Â
St. Cloud's Robby Jackson was awarded a goal 43 seconds into the third period after the play on the ice was reviewed, confirming the puck crossed the goal line on a quick play in front of Miami's netminder. Jackson's goal would end up being the game winner for the Huskies.Â
Â
The RedHawks would make one more play to tie the game again at 4:38 of the third before SCSU secured their win with three unanswered goals. Sam Hentges, assisted by Brodzinski, followed by a Brodzinski goal assisted by Hentges put the Huskies ahead. Blake Lizotte then completed the cherry on top with an empty-net goal at 17:27 of the period for a final score of 6-3 SCSU.Â
Â
St. Cloud State's goaltender David Hrenak stopped 18 shots in the game; the Redhawks' Ryan Larkin had 39 saves. Final shots on goal from today's game were SCSU 45, MIAMI 21. St. Cloud went 0-5 on the power play, 3-3 on the penalty kill.
