St. Cloud State's Ryan Poehling signs pro hockey contract with the Montreal Canadiens

St. Cloud State University junior forward Ryan Poehling (Lakeville, Minn.) signed a contract to play professional hockey with the Montreal Canadiens organization on Sunday, March 31.
Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin announced that the team has agreed to terms on a three-year, entry-level contract (2018-19 to 2020-21) with Poehling, who is a resident of Lakeville, Minn.
A forward for the Huskies, Poehling recorded 31 points (8 goals, 23 assists) in 36 games with the Huskies this season. A first team All-NCHC pick in 2018-19, Poehling helped SCSU win two consecutive NCHC regular season championships in 2017-18 and 2018-19.
Poehling registered a total of 75 points (29 goals, 46 assists) in 107 games over three seasons with the Huskies. Poehling and the Huskies completed the 2018-19 season with a 30-6-3 overall record and a 19-2-3 NCHC record. SCSU was the #1 overall seed in this year's NCAA Division I men's hockey tournament.
Selected by the Canadiens in the first round, 25th overall at the 2017 NHL Draft, Poehling was a member of Team USA at the 2018 and 2019 World Junior Hockey Championships. He named both Tournament MVP and Best Forward at the 2019 event, helping the Americans earn a silver medal. He registered eight points (5 goals, 3 assists) in seven games.
Poehling participated in the Canadiens' development camp in 2017 and in 2018. He joins SCSU teammate Patrick Newell in signing pro contracts over the last two days. Newell signed with the New York Rangers organization on March 30. Of note, a total of 33 former SCSU players have gone on to play pro hockey in the NHL since 1931.
