ST. CLOUD, MINN. – After a highly successful 2018 campaign, the St. Cloud State University volleyball team is ready for the 2019 season to start. The Huskies won't have to wait very long, as they officially released their 2019 schedule Wednesday morning.
St. Cloud State will once again face some of the top volleyball teams in the region and nation thanks to a tough nonconference and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) schedule. The Huskies will open the season on Thursday, September 5 at the Dixie State Tournament in St. George, Utah before returning to St. Cloud to host the 2019 Husky Invite September 12-14.
"We are very excited to announce our 2019 campaign and are looking to continue the upward trajectory that we have been on as of late," head coach Chad Braegelmann said in a statement. "We play a very tough pre-season schedule opening in Utah before coming home and playing two 2018 NCAA Tournament teams in Michigan Tech and Wheeling Jesuit. The NSIC schedule continues to be a gauntlet and we will undoubtedly play a number of ranked teams throughout the conference season."
Thanks to the Best Western Plus Kelly Inn Husky Volleyball Classic, St. Cloud State will play 14 matches in the comforts of Halenbeck Hall this season, four more home matches than the team played in 2018. Tickets for both the Huskies regular season home matches and the Volleyball Classic will officially go on sale on July 1, 2019.
Here are the five things to know about the 2019 volleyball schedule:
15/11 - In 2018, St. Cloud State recorded its best overall and NSIC record since joining the conference in 2009, as the team posted an overall record of 15-11 and went 11-9 in NSIC play. The Huskies record was good enough to finish in a three-way tie for seventh place in the conference standings, but they were on the outside looking in when it came to the conference tournament. Despite a seventh place finish, St. Cloud State did not qualify for the NSIC tournament due to tiebreakers, a fact the team is hoping to render in 2019.
2 – The Huskies lost just two seniors to graduation, meaning they return the core of their team for the 2019 season. Reigning NSIC Libero of the Year Clara Krenz (Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul) is back for her senior season, while NSIC and Central Region Freshman of the Year Linsey Rachel (Maple Lake, Minn. / Maple Lake) is also back after a standout rookie debut with the Huskies. Also returning in 2019 is setter Maddy Torve (Loretto, Minn. / Heritage Christian Academy), outside hitters Erin Navratil (Albany, Minn. / Albany) and Abby Templin (Cold Spring, Minn. / Ricori), middle blockers Marah Mulso (Marshall, Minn. / Marshall), Halle Hughes (Mankato, Minn/Mankato West) and Allison Naughton (Des Moines, Iowa / Dowling Catholic). Rachel Houle (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater Area), Taylor Olstad (Eagan, Minn. / Eagan) and Bella Erne (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) round out the 2019 returners that saw extended action in 2018.
5 –St. Cloud State will once again play five teams twice during the conference season in 2019 and those matches won't be cake walks. The Huskies will be forced to face national powerhouse Concordia-St. Paul twice in 2019, as well as Winona State, Upper Iowa and Minnesota State. St. Cloud State is also switching the pod partners in they place twice in 2019, meaning the team will face Minnesota-Crookston twice in 2019 rather than Minnesota-Duluth as the NSIC coaches voted to rotate the pod partner they play twice instead of always playing their travel partner twice.
9-12 – The Huskies home opener will be titch earlier than it's been in previous years. St. Cloud State will host Bemidji State University at 5:30 p.m. in its home opener on Thursday, September 12 in a non-conference matchup. The match will also serve as the opener for the Husky Invitational, a three-day tournament that will feature eight of the top teams in the region. Fans can purchase a Three-Day Pass to the tournament for $20 and $15 for a Two-Day Pass. Single day passes will be $10 for adults and $5/day for children ages 3-18. St. Cloud State students and children under the age of two are free.
9-20 – The Huskies will also open the 2019 NSIC season in the comforts of Halenbeck Hall, as they host Winona State at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 20. St. Cloud State will play four NSIC home series in 2019 and will host Minnesota-Crookston and Minnesota-Duluth in weeknight matches in October and November.
