Three Huskies named to BW Kelly Inn Classic All-Tournament Team

ST. CLOUD, MINN. – The St. Cloud State University volleyball team did something this past weekend the team hasn't done in 34 years: won its eighth straight game to open a season.
Yes, the Huskies went 4-0 at the BW Kelly Inn Huskies Volleyball Classic in St. Cloud, Minnesota this past weekend, improving their overall record to 8-0, the team's best start to a season since 1985. Thanks to its remarkable performance. St. Cloud State had three individuals named to the All-Tournament Team, including senior libero Clara Krenz (Oakdale, Minn. / North St. Paul), junior setter Maddy Torve (Loretto, Minn. / Heritage Christian Academy) and first year middle blocker Phebie Rossi (Rapid City, S.D. / Stevens).
Rossi was the team's hottest hitter throughout the tournament, as she racked up 32 kills while committing just 10 errors on 69 attempts for a weekend hitting percentage of .319. The first year middle blocker was also a force at the net, as Rossi recorded 10 blocks throughout the four matches and had several touches to help the Huskies defense. Rossi tallied 11 kills and one block in her Halenbeck Hall debut and recorded a .500 hitting percentage, helping St. Cloud State earn a resounding 3-0 sweep of Bemidji State. One of her best performances of the weekend, though, came against No. 14 Wheeling Jesuit, as she recorded 10 kills and five blocks to help the Huskies take down the No. 14 ranked team in the nation.
Torve put together another stellar weekend, as she piloted St. Cloud State's offense to four wins at the BW Kelly Inn Huskies Volleyball Classic. In four matches, the junior setter recorded 162 total assists, averaging an impressive 40.5 assists per match over the weekend, with five kills, 30 digs and eight blocks. Her best performance of the weekend came when the Huskies needed her most, as Torve racked up a career-high 54 assists in the team's 3-1 win over No. 21 Michigan Tech. Torve additionally set a career-high in blocks that match, as she tallied five over the course of four sets.
Krenz was once again a stalwart for the Huskies defensively, as she had four more outstanding performances at the team's home tournament over the weekend. In four matches, Krenz tallied 80 digs, including 27 in the Huskies 3-1 win over No. 21 Michigan Tech, and additionally added one ace in a key victory over No. 14 Wheeling Jesuit. She currently leads the NSIC at 6.73 digs per set and her 175 total digs rank second to Augustana's Erika Bute.
Members of the BW Kelly Inn Huskies Volleyball Classic were selected by coaches and select staff who worked the tournament throughout the weekend. All eight teams in the tournament had at least one representative, while St. Cloud State and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) rival Minnesota-Duluth had three recipients on the list.
The Huskies will look to continue their hot start to the 2019 season as they host Winona State University in their NSIC home opener on Friday, September 20. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
