SCSU men's hockey loses 6-3 match at #5 Denver on Jan. 10

The St. Cloud State University men's hockey dropped a 6-3 match at #5 University of Denver on Friday, Jan. 10. The loss moves SCSU's record to 6-9-4, 3-6-0 NCHC, while Denver is now 14-4-3, 4-3-2 NCHC.
The two teams will complete their weekend series at Magness Arena in Denver, Colo. with an 8:07 p.m. CT game on Saturday, Jan. 11. Fans can listen to the game in St. Cloud on The River 96.7 FM and they can watch the action live on NCHC.tv/scsu
Denver gained the game's upperhand in the first period with a pair of goals by Hank Crone and Kohen Olischefski, which gave the Pioneers' a 2-0 lead after the first 20:00 minutes of play.
In the second period, SCSU broke the shutout with power play marker by Jack Poehling at 3:30. He was assisted on the play by Nolan Walker and Nick Poehling. This was Jack Poehling's fourth goal of the season and it was the seventh assist each for Walker and Nick Poehling on the 2019-20 season.
DU's Ryan Barrow gave his squad a 3-1 lead with a power play goal at 11:43 of the second, before the Huskies charged back with another power play goal at 14:26 of the second by Easton Brodzinski. Assists on the play were posted by Walker and Jack Ahcan. The goal was Brodzinski's team-leading eighth goal of the year, while it pushed Walker's assist total to eight for the winter.
The point for Ahcan was his 12th helper of the year and it moved his career total to 94 points and 76 assists. Ahcan is now tied for 16th on the Huskies' all-time assist leaders list along with Brian Cook at 76 (1987-91).
In the third period, Denver added three unanswered goals to ice the game. Ian Mitchell posted the game winner with a shorthanded goal at 7:16 of the third. His tally was followed by a 5x3 PPG by Denver's Crone at 13:45 of the third, and an empty net goal by DU at 18:27 of the third by Brett Stapley.
SCSU finalized the tally with a last second goal by Chase Brand. His goal at 19:57 of the third period was assisted by Kevin Fitzgerald and made the final score 6-3. On the night, DU outshot the Huskies 48-26 and David Hrenak made 42 saves in the contest for SCSU. On the power play, SCSU and DU were both 2-of-3. Of note, Hrenak's 42 saves are the most for a SCSU goalie since Jeff Smith posted 42 saves against Minnesota State on Oct 7, 2017.
