MINOT, N.D. – There are days where everything just falls into place. Where everything happens almost as perfectly as it possibly can, and even the things that go wrong don't seem so bad.
Friday was one of those days (and nights) for the St. Cloud State University women's basketball team.
The Huskies extended their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) win streak to three games, as they cruised to a 69-45 victory over Minot State University. In fact, it might have been St. Cloud State's most complete game of the season, as the team saw four student-athletes score in double-digits and held its opponent to under 50 points for the third time this 2019-20 season.
The Huskies were firing on all cylinders in the opening half, as they jumped to an early 45-24 lead over the Beavers. In fact, St. Cloud State did not miss a shot in the opening seven minutes of play, allowing the team to end the first quarter with a .667 shooting percentage and an even better 26-12 lead over Minot State. The good times continued to roll in the second quarter, as the Huskies put up 19 while holding the Beavers to 12, allowing them to walk into the locker room at halftime with a 45-24 lead.
The third quarter proved to be the closest, as the two teams both scored 13 points in 10 minutes of play. However, Minot State had nothing to counterattack St. Cloud State's red-hot shooting, as the Huskies maintained a 21 point cushion and led 58-37 entering the final quarter. There, the good times continued to roll, as St. Cloud State continued to extend its lead watched as a free throw from first year Courtney Freeberg (Waconia, Minn. / Waconia) clinched the 69-45 victory for the Huskies.
St. Cloud State had much to be proud of after the victory, as four student-athletes scored in double-digits Friday evening. Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) led the way with 14, while Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere), Madelin Dammann (Waconia, Minn. / Waconia) and Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / North) all finished the night with 13. Kilboten recorded yet another double-double this season, as she led the team with a season-high 13 rebounds in the victory.
The Huskies defense again dominated, as they held Minot State to a team field goal percentage of .361 and allowed the Beavers to score just 45 points in 40 minutes of play. St. Cloud State also forced 17 Minot State turnovers and did not allow a single Beavers to score in double-digits during regulation.
With the win, the Huskies overall record improves to 9-4 and the team is 6-3 in NSIC play. St. Cloud State will put its win streak on the line Saturday, as the team takes on the University of Mary at 3:30 p.m. in Bismarck, North Dakota.
