#1 Huskies continue winning ways in Louisville with 39-3 victory

The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team (8-0, 2-0 NSIC) punched its ticket to the semifinals of the 2020 NWCA Division II National Duals with an impressive 39-3 vicory over #7 ranked Tiffin University on Friday, Jan. 10. The NWCA tournament is being held on Jan. 10-11 in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Huskies will now face #6 University of Central Oklahoma in the semifinals of the NWCA DII National Duals on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 11 a.m. In the other semifinal match scheduled for Jan. 11, #4 Nebraska-Kearney will face #5 McKendree. To reach the semi's, Nebraska-Kearney beat #2 Pitt-Johnstown 24-16, Central Oklahoma defeated Notre Dame (Ohio) 28-10 and McKendree edged #8 Upper Iowa.
In the victory over Tiffin, SCSU kicked off the match with a 14-8 win by Robby Horsman over Tiffin's Ray Adams III. At 133, #2 Garrett Vos posted a big 13-1 major decision win over Tiffin's Richetshaye Puente. At 141, #4 Garrett Aldrich added bonus points for the Huskies with a quick 1:07 fall over Tiffin's Dylan Mansor.
The wins continued at 149 pounds as #2 James Pleski battled to a 3-2 victory over #5 ranked Chris Donathan of Tiffin. The Huskies' lone loss of the day was at 157 pounds as #1 ranked Jake Barzowski lost a close 3-1 match in sudden death against #2 ranked Trey Grine of Tiffin.
SCSU bounced back quickly as Devin Donovan scored another first period fall at 1:43 against Tiffin's Bryan LaVearn, which gave SCSU a commanding 22-3 lead. At 174, #2 Kolton Eischens added a 6-2 win and then #3 Tyree Overton scored a 12-3 major decision at 184 pounds to push SCSU's winning margin to 29-3.
To end the contest, Riley Vanik majored with a 12-3 win over Tiffin's Nick Smythe at 197 pounds, and #9 Ezayah Oropeza received a forfeit win and six points at 285 pounds to wrap the score at 39-3.
This was SCSU's 56th consecutive dual match victory, which is an NCAA Division II record. The last time SCSU lost a dual match was on Jan. 14, 2017 vs. Indianapolis.
