12/7/2020 11:18:00 AM | Men's Hockey
The St. Cloud State University men's hockey team (3-0-0, 3-0-0 NCHC) made its debut in college hockey's Division I men's top 20 polls this week with a #11 ranking in the USA Today/USA Hockey poll and a #13 ranking in the USCHO.com poll. This marks the first time this season that SCSU has earned a spot in top 20 poll after receiving votes in the previous USCHO.com polls released in 2020-21.
The USCHO.com poll was released on Dec. 7 and it consists of 40 voters, including coaches and beat writers and sports professionals from across the country. The poll, published weekly by the Associated Press, is a production of USCHO.com, which provides in-depth coverage of college hockey.
The 26th annual USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll is conducted each week in conjunction with the American Hockey Coaches Association. The poll includes input from coaches and journalists representing each of the six NCAA Division I ice hockey conferences, as well as composite votes from officers of the AHCA and USA Hockey.
The Huskies gained their #11/13 ranking by virtue of a 3-0-0 record in games played at the NCHC pod over the past week. SCSU opened the week on Dec. 1 with a big 4-3 win over then ranked #17 Western Michigan. On Dec. 5, SCSU posted a 4-3 win over then ranked #4 Denver and completed the weekend with a 5-3 victory over Omaha, which is ranked #18 in this week's poll. SCSU received 226 points in the USCHO.com poll, while North Dakota was ranked #1 with 784 points. NCHC rival Minnesota Duluth was ranked #3 in the poll and Denver was ranked #9 in the USCHO poll this week. In the USA Today/USA Hockey poll, SCSU had 143 points while UND ranked #1 with 494 points and UMD was third with 431 points. Denver ranked #8 in the USA Today/USA Hockey poll with 211 points.
SCSU will continue play in the Omaha pod on Dec. 9 with a game against Western Michigan University at 3:35 p.m. The game will be played at Baxter Arena in Omaha, Neb.
