St. Cloud State University senior Jack Ahcan became just the third defenseman in the Division I history of the program to score 100 career points on Saturday, Feb. 8 during the Huskies' 2-2 tie at Colorado College (8-16-2, 3-13-2 NCHC) in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Ahcan joined SCSU's elite 100-point club with the first assist on Easton Brodzinski's power play goal at 16:07 of the third period, which tied the game at 2-2. Nick Poehling added the second assist on the goal, which helped cap a comeback for the Huskies after they trailed 2-0 in the second period at CC's Broadmoor World Arena.
Ahcan becomes the 34th place in club history at the DI level to score 100-or-more career points and he currently ranks third among SCSU blueliners for career points behind Kelly Hultgren (107) and Jimmy Schuldt (118).
To open the contest, CC struck first in the game with a goal by Ben Copeland at 18:10 of the first period, which was assisted by Grant Cruickshank. The Tigers then pushed their lead to 2-0 with a goal by Josiah Slavin at 5:18, which included an assist by Connor Mayer.
The Huskies finally broke the shutout in the second period at 14:19 with a goal by Nolan Walker, which was assisted by Easton Brodzinski. This was Walker's first goal of the 2019-20 season and it was Brodzinski's 12th assist of the winter. Of note, Brodzinski now leads the team with 12 goals and 24 points scored in 2019-20.
Brodzinski later scored the game tying goal to force the OT session, which saw the score still knotted at 2-2 after the first five minutes. Neither team was able to score in the 3x3 overtime session, which resulted in CC winning the extra league point in the shootout with a goal by Cruickshank on the first attempt. SCSU was not able to convert on their attempt, which provided CC with the shootout win.
On the night, SCSU outshot the Tigers 34-33 as David Hrenak had 21 saves and saw his season mark move to 10-9-4. SCSU was 1-of-4 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill against CC. SCSU has not allowed a power play goal in its last four games played (going 12-of-12 on the PK in those four games).
SCSU (11-12-5, 8-9-1 NCHC) will enjoy a bye weekend on Feb. 14-15 before returning to the ice at the HBNHC with home games against North Dakota on Feb. 21-22. For complete ticket information on these important NCHC contests, please visit scsutickets.com or call 1-877-SCSUTIX.
