Nikki Kilboten joins 1000 point club in victory
HAYS, KANSAS – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team is officially in the win column. After a tough 58-51 loss to #4 Fort Hays State University Friday evening, the Huskies rebounded with a big 73-59 win over Newman University, improving to 1-1 overall this season. Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) led with 24 points for St. Cloud State, while Morgan Draheim (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) closed with a career-high 15 points for the Huskies.
GAME NOTES
St. Cloud State's defense was once again on display in its second game of the 2021-22 season, as the Huskies held the Jets to 33 first half points. St. Cloud State's offensive game was also on fire, as the team cruised to a 42-33 lead entering the locker room at half. Evans was the team's top scorer from the get go, scoring 16 points in the first half alone on 5-6 shooting with a 6-6 mark from the charity stripe. Draheim scored 12 of her career-high 15 points in the first half as well, coming in off the bench to relieve Evans.
The Huskies strong play in the first half allowed them to make a little history in the second, specifically Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire North). The fifth year senior scored just four points against Newman, but that was all she needed to reach the 1000th career point mark, becoming the 33rd student-athlete to join the club. Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) also scored 10 points in the game, helping the Huskies to their first victory of the season by a final score of 73-59.
TOP HUSKIES
- Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) had a day in Hays, Kansas, scoring a season-high 24 points in just the second game of the season. The junior shot 8-12 from the floor, including a 2-4 mark form three-point range.
- Mogan Draheim (Hortonville, Wis. / Hortonville) scored a career-high 15 points in the win over the Jets, including 12 in the first half alone.
UP NEXT
St. Cloud State will open the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season on Tuesday, November 23. The Huskies will travel to Duluth, Minnesota to face Minnesota-Duluth at 5:30 p.m.
