ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 1 St. Cloud State Wrestling opened their 2021-22 dual schedule by winning the program's NCAA DII record 70th consecutive dual with a 33-6 final over No. 14 Lake Erie on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies posted four bonus-point wins with a pair of pins by No. 5 Noah Ryan and No. 3 Colby Njos, a Paxton Creese tech fall and a major decision courtesy of No. 1 Joseph Bianchini.
SPOTLIGHT MATCH
The matchup at 197 featured No. 5 Noah Ryan squaring off with No. 6 Chris Droege in a rematch of last year's seventh place bout at the NCAA Championships. After giving up an early takedown in the first, Ryan picked up an escape and immediately turned to his offense. Scoring a two-point takedown off a low single attack, the All-American turned Droege to his back and locked in the pin with 10 seconds to spare in the opening period.
DUAL RESULTS
157 – No. 3 Colby Njos pins Jacob Potok at 3:00 (6-0 SCSU)
165 – No. 7 James Penfold over Devin Donovan, 4-3 (6-3 SCSU)
174 – Dominic Murphy by sudden victory-1 over John Penfold, 3-1 (9-3 SCSU)
184 – No. 8 Billy Pitzner over Brylan Clouse, 6-0 (12-3 SCSU)
197 – No. 5 Noah Ryan pins No. 6 Chris Droege at 2:50 (18-3 SCSU)
HWT – Ronnie D'Amico over Kaleb Haase, 3-1 (18-6 SCSU)
125 – Paxton Creese by tech fall over Jordan Rodriguez, 17-1 (23-6 SCSU)
133 – No. 3 Garrett Vos over Corey Gamet, 7-4 (26-6 SCSU)
141 – No. 1 Joseph Bianchini by major decision over Nate DeBoe, 14-3 (30-6 SCSU)
149 – Jake Barzowski over Jack Haskin, 3-2 (33-6 SCSU)
QUOTABLES
St. Cloud State Wrestling Head Coach Steve Costanzo
"You win eight of 10 matches, it's hard to complain about that. But when you look at our attack ratio in those 10 matches, I don't think it was very good. I would've liked to see our guys open up and score more points. Joey did a great job of it at 141, and Paxton at 125. I feel like this team has a lot more to offer than what they showed today."
UP NEXT
The Huskies next travel to Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina for the Carolina Clash Duals on December 4.
