Four student-athletes score 10+ points in the win
ABERDEEN, S.D. – The St. Cloud State University women's basketball team is back to its winning ways. After suffering their first loss of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) season on Friday, the Huskies rebounded in a big way Saturday evening, defeating Northern State 66-50. With the win, St. Cloud State is now 8-2 overall and 6-1 in NSIC play.
BLOW IT ALL DOWN
Saturday's game between St. Cloud State and Northern State started much like Friday's, as the two teams traded baskets and points, resulting in a 14-14 draw after the first quarter. The second quarter, though, was all Huskies all the time, as they blitzed the Wolves to score 19 points and take a 33-22 lead entering the locker room at half. Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) was the team's leading scorer in the opening half, scoring nine points, while Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) tallied four steals in the opening 20 minutes alone.
St. Cloud State struggled in the third quarter, as Northern State cut the lead to 47-42 entering the fourth. However, that was as close as the Wolves would get to catching the Huskies, as they went ahead and scored 19 fourth quarter points to secure the 66-50 victory. Additionally, St. Cloud State held Northern State to just eight points in the final 10 minutes and 2-10 shooting, earning the victory once again with dominant defense.
TOP HUSKIES
- Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) and Erin Navratil (Albany, Minn. / Albany) were on fire Saturday evening, as they scored 17 and 16 points respectively. The 16 point performance is a season-high for Navratil, who went 6-10 from the floor, including a 4-5 clip from three point range.
- Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) proved why she was named the NSIC Defensive Player of the Year last season, as she tallied nine steals against the Wolves. That number currently ranks second all-time in single game steals with the record set at 10.
UP NEXT
St. Cloud State will enjoy a small break over the holidays before returning to NSIC action on January 2. The Huskies will host Minnesota-Duluth at 4:00 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall that day.
