
Second half surge leads to 72-59 victory at Augustana

Tori Wortz scores 24 points on 11-17 shooting in victory
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – Another successful road trip is in the books for the St. Cloud State University women's basketball team. The Huskies will leave Sioux Falls, South Dakota with an overall record of 14-3 and a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) mark of 12-2 thanks to a 72-59 victory over Augustana Saturday night.
SAIL TO DISTANT SHORES
It was tight from the get go between St. Cloud State and Augustana, as the two teams never led by more than five points throughout the first half. In fact, the Vikings led 17-14 after the first quarter, outsourcing the Huskies on .385 shooting, including a 3-6 clip from three point range. St. Cloud State answered in the second quarter, outscoring Augustana 20-18 to cut the Vikings lead to 35-34 at halftime.
The two teams would match each other shot for shot in the third quarter, though it was the Huskies that got out to the hot start. St. Cloud State cruised to a five-point lead, using big shots from Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire North) and Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) to jump ahead 48-43 midway through the quarter. However, the Huskies shooters went cold for however brief a time, allowing the Vikings to even the score and go ahead 54-52 entering the fourth quarter.
That was where the scoring stopped for Augustana, as St. Cloud State's defense took over in the closing 10 minutes of regulation. In fact, the Huskies surrendered just five Vikings points in the fourth quarter, holding their hosts to .111 shooting from the floor. Meanwhile, St. Cloud State's offense took control, as the Huskies scored 20 fourth quarter points to secure the 72-59 victory.
TOP HUSKIES
- Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) scored 20+ points for the third time this season, putting up 24 on 11-17 shooting with five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) scored 12 points in the victory and added five rebounds, four assists and five steals. Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire North) added 10 points, a team-leading nine rebounds and three blocks in the victory.
UP NEXT
After two long weeks on the road, the Huskies return home next weekend for another NSIC series. St. Cloud State will open the weekend on Friday, January 28 when the team hosts Sioux Falls at 5:30 p.m. in Halenbeck Hall.
