ST. CLOUD, MINN. – There's hot, and then there's St. Cloud State University women's basketball hot. The Huskies once again earned a dominant win in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play, as they badgered their way to a 72-48 win over Sioux Falls. With the win, St. Cloud State is now 15-3 overall and 13-2 in NSIC play.
FIRING ON ALL CYLINDERS
The first quarter was pure chaos, as the Huskies and Cougars worked fervently to outrace the clock. With the shot clock playing tricks on everyone, it was St. Cloud State that managed to gain the initial advantage, racing out to a 16-9 lead after the opening quarter. The turning point came at the five minute mark, as a shot clock review flipped possession from Sioux Falls to the Huskies, which preceded a 5-0 scoring run for the home team. Two blocks by Nikki Kilboten (Eau Claire, Wis. / Eau Claire North) and a handful of threes by Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) and Brehna Evans (De Pere, Wis. / West De Pere) fueled St. Cloud State's offensive motor, resulting in a 37-22 lead over the Cougars at the half.
The physicality of the two teams continued to be on display in the third quarter, as the Huskies jumped out to a 47-24 lead before the six minute mark. From that point on, it was pretty much all St. Cloud State all the time. The Huskies offensive explosion and defensive tenacity resulted in a 56-27 third quarter lead, as they held their opponent to just five points in a physical third quarter. Though Sioux Falls did manage to score 10+ points in the fourth, the damage was already done for St. Cloud State, as the Huskies went on to rout the Cougars 72-48.
