Lori Fish moves to second all-time with 219 career wins
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – If there's one thing St. Cloud State University women's basketball head coach Lori Fish knows how to do, it's win. The veteran coach moved into a tie for second all-time in career wins Saturday afternoon after guiding the Huskies to a 63-44 win over Southwest Minnesota State. The victory was not only Fish's 219th of her career with St. Cloud State, but was also the Huskies 16th of the season, as they improved to 16-3 overall and 14-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play.
SATURDAY RUN CLUB
For as chaotic as Friday's game against Sioux Falls was, Saturday's contest against SMSU took it up another notch. The Huskies and Mustangs matched each other shot for shot in the opening minutes of the first quarter, working to a 14-14 draw with two minutes remaining. A 5-0 scoring run in the final two minutes by St. Cloud State allowed the Huskies to hold a 19-14 lead after the opening quarter. Unfortunately, it was SMSU that did most of the scoring in the second quarter, as the Mustangs cut St. Cloud State's lead to 19-18 by the media timeout. The Huskies, though, came out of the timeout swinging, closing on a 10-1 run to hold a 29-19 lead entering the locker room at half.
St. Cloud State was hot to start the third quarter, cruising to a 43-33 lead with three minutes remaining in the quarter. SMSU, though, made things interesting, cutting the lead to nine at the two minute mark. Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) had other ideas, extending the Huskies lead to 47-35 entering the final quarter.
The double-digit lead would not hold, though, as SMSU once again cut St. Cloud State's lead back to single digits. In the end, though, the Huskies offense and defense proved to be too much for the Mustangs, as they outscored the visitors 16-9 in the fourth to secure the 63-44 victory.
