Tori Wortz breaks the program record for career three-pointers made in the third quarter
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – A lot of good things are happening for the St. Cloud State University women's basketball team. The Huskies improved to 17-3 overall and 15-2 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) play after a resounding 67-45 win over Northern State Friday evening. In the victory, Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) broke the school record for career three-pointers made, while Lori Fish won her 220th game as the team's head coach.
NOT IN OUR HOUSE
Everything was working for St. Cloud State in the first quarter, as the Huskies held the Wolves to just eight points while scoring 16 of their own in the opening 10 minutes of play. The second quarter proved to be a different story for St. Cloud State. Though the Huskies continued to find open shots, they were unable to convert, allowing Northern State to cut the lead to 23-16 midway through the quarter. That was the last time the Wolves would score in the opening half, as St. Cloud State closed on a 9-0 run to hold a 32-16 lead at halftime.
The Wolves again tried to cut into the Huskies lead early in the third quarter, as they made three unanswered layups despite tough defense by St. Cloud State. This time, the Huskies didn't have an answer, as Northern State managed to whittle the Huskies lead to 42-35 with one minute left in the quarter. Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) was not about to let that stand, as the senior drained her fifth three of the night with .01 on the clock to extend St. Cloud State's lead to 45-35 entering the fourth quarter.
The double-digit lead was more than enough for the Huskies, as they held the Wolves to 10 fourth quarter points en route to a rousing 67-45 victory. In addition to holding Northern State to 10 points or less in three of the four quarters, St. Cloud State did not give up a single three-pointer all night, holding the Wolves to 0-11 shooting from beyond the arc.
TOP HUSKIES
- Tori Wortz (Hutchinson, Minn. / Hutchinson) was the team's top-scorer Friday night, leading the way with 22 points thanks to 5-11 shooting from beyond the arc.
