St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey Opens Season with Win over St. Thomas

Huskies score three first period goals, hangs on for victory
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – No. 13 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (1-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) opened the 2022-23 campaign with a 3-1 road victory over St. Thomas on Saturday evening in Mendota Heights, Minn. The Huskies scored three first period goals and outshot the Tommies, 23-11, to pull out the season-opening win.
TURNING POINT
After a serious injury to sophomore defenseman Josh Luedtke (Minnetonka, Minn.) in the first six minutes, St. Cloud State needed to regroup and play for their teammate, and that they did. Soon after play resumed, the Huskies scored twice in a span of 30 seconds, as senior defenseman Dylan Anhorn (Calgary, Alberta) and senior forward Zach Okabe (Okotoks, Alberta) scored at the 8:44 and 9:08 marks of the first period, respectively.
Freshman forward Adam Ingram (West St. Paul, Manitoba) would tack on another goal late in the third period, scoring on the power play off assists from sophomore forward Veeti Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) and Anhorn.

St. Cloud State and St. Thomas will finish its season-opening series on Sunday, Oct. 2 as the Huskies host the Tommies. Puck drop from the Herb Brooks National Hockey center is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. CT on Fox 9 +.

- Anhorn scored his first goal as a Husky and the first goal of the season while adding an assist as well.
- Okabe scored the Huskies' second goal and added an assist on Anhorn's goal.
- Miettinen recorded two assists in the game, assisting on the Okabe and Ingram goals.
- Senior goalie Jaxon Castor (Phoenix, Ariz.) stopped 10 saves to record the win between the pipes for the Huskies.
- St. Cloud State has now won three consecutive season openers after beating Western Michigan 4-3 on Dec. 1, 2020 to open the 2020-21 campaign and St. Thomas, 12-2, on Oct. 2, 2021.
- Okabe's first period goal was his 25th career goal and 60th career point.
- Ingram scored a goal in his first collegiate game.
- The nation's top power play unit from last season picked up right where it left off, as Ingram scored on the power play in the first period. Last season, the Huskies were 16-7-2 when scoring on the power play.
- Playing in his 21st career game, Castor recorded 10 or more saves for the 16th time in his career and improved to 7-8-0.
