SCSU outhit .360 to .149 as they fall in straight sets to Golden Bears
ST. PAUL, Minn. – No. 6 St. Cloud State Volleyball lost in straight sets to No. 3 Concordia-St. Paul on Friday evening at the Gangelhoff Center.
The Huskies committed 20 errors to the Golden Bears' seven as they were outhit .360 to .149. Linsey Rachel provided a strong performance with 13 kills and six digs on .407 hitting while Phebie Rossi added eight kills and hit .353. Keely Kurschner led the St. Cloud State defense with 13 digs.
SCSU allowed nine Golden Bear aces and hit into eight blocks with just four and two of their own respectively.
Turning Point
After jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the first set, St. Cloud State's defense stumbled as Concordia-St. Paul's offense found their footing. The Golden Bears hit .400 in the first to take the set 25-16 before outkilling the Huskies 16-9 on .538 hitting in the second, going on to take the match in straight sets.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Chad Braegelmann
"Concordia is a top-five team in the country for a reason. They put us in a lot of really uncomfortable spots in the serve-and-pass game. They served us tough and they passed well off our serves. We felt that they were in system the whole time…statistically that was our worst match of the season. They're good volleyball players, they will make you beat them."
"They served really tough. They had nine aces, they didn't miss many serves, we were on our heels a lot. We had a lot of balls passed to the 10-foot line, and that becomes very difficult. You see it with our set distribution. We were super heavy to the outsides. It's really tough to get anything going. Some really tough spots with their big block on the left front."
"So much of our game revolves around serving and passing. I think the focus is going to continue to serve tough to our opponents and make sure we are really locked in to be in a better spot offensively. When we do get the chance to swing, we need to make sure we're got good body-ball, making big aggressive swings deep into the court."
"I thought we did some good things. We were better with our hands, blocking-wise. We didn't get many stuff blocks tonight, but we didn't get used a lot either. We had some nice stretches defensively where we dug some balls, but they were just so low-error that it didn't really feel like we were getting any real momentum out there. I like the way our team has responded to past losses, so hopefully we'll be ready to bounce back tomorrow."
