MANKATO, Minn. – No. 6 St. Cloud State Volleyball leaned on their returning All-Americans to down Minnesota State-Mankato in four sets on Saturday afternoon at the Taylor Center.
Kenzie Foley, Linsey Rachel and Phebie Rossi combined for 46 of 57 SCSU kills as the Huskies outkilled MSU by 12. Foley sent down 20 kills on .265 hitting, adding seven digs, three aces and a block. Rachel double-doubled with 14 kills and 18 digs while hitting .281, scoring twice from the service line. Rossi terminated 12 kills at a .379 clip with a pair of blocks to stay red-hot in the middle.
Sam Zimmerman took advantage of her swings with a 7-1-13 line, hitting .462 with two blocks. Keely Kurschner provided 17 digs on the defensive end while Emma Berran directed the offense with 43 assists.
Turning Point
Taking the first two sets 25-20 and 25-23, St. Cloud State's defense waned in the third as the Mavericks were terminal on 11 of their 22 swings with no errors. The Huskies regrouped and locked back in early in the fourth, forcing MSU into six errors with just nine kills to take the match in four.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Chad Braegelmann
"We definitely filled the box score today. We had a lot of kills, we had a lot of attack errors, we had a lot of aces, we had quite a few service errors. Our impact was felt on both sides of the ball, both positive and negative at times. Overall, I liked the way we competed – it felt like we had control of the match outside of the last half of the third set. We did a really good job of refocusing and finishing off that fourth set."
"Our balance was a little better today. We were still really heavy to our left fronts – I'd like us to do a bit better job of getting Sam and Makena some more swings. When we were having success early in the season, I felt we were doing a good job of involving them more regularly."
"We made some pretty good decisions. We were going to end the rallies on our swings, whether it be with kills or errors. I felt we did a better job of getting the ball to the pins with tempo. Our hitters have the ability to put pace on their swings and put some pressure on the defense."
Notables
The Huskies return home for a Thursday evening match against Bemidji State at Halenbeck Hall then travel north for a Saturday match at Minnesota Crookston. First serve for the two matches are scheduled for 6:00 and 2:00 p.m. CT respectively.
