Three Power Play Goals Powers St. Cloud State Men’s Hockey to Series Sweep over St. Thomas

Four Huskies score, Basse records shutout in series-clinching sweep
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 13 St. Cloud State Men's Hockey (2-0-0, 0-0-0 NCHC) finished out a season-opening sweep of St. Thomas (0-2-0, 0-0-0 CCHA) with a 4-0 win on Saturday evening at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center. The Huskies scored three power play goals and had four different goal scorers while netminder newcomer junior goalie Dominic Basse (Alexandria, Va.) made 14 saves for the shutout victory.
TURNING POINT
Even though the Huskies controlled the pace while outshooting the Tommies 11-3 in the first period, both teams were scoreless until 17:57 into the opening period when junior Veeti Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) found the back of the net on a power play. Just like the first game of the series, it didn't take the Huskies long to strike again, as fifth-year senior forward Grant Cruikshank (Delafield, Wis.) scored his first goal as a Husky at 19:01 in the period to give St. Cloud State a 2-0 lead.
The Huskies never looked back after grabbing the lead, outshooting the Tommies 38-15 while expanding their lead to 4-0 with a pair of goals in the third period.

- Miettinen was named the first star of the game after scoring the first goal of the game and adding an assist on senior forward Jami Krannila's (Nokia, Finland) third period goal.
- Cruikshank earned the second star after scoring his first goal as a Husky and recording an assist on Miettinen's score.
- Making his first start in goal for the Huskies, Basse made 14 saves to record a shutout.
- With his first period goal, Miettinen recorded his 50th career point as a Husky. In two seasons, the junior forward has scored 22 goals with 29 assists for 51 career points.
- Senior defenseman Dylan Anhorn (Calgary, Alberta) matched a career-high with two assists in the game, the fifth time he's hit that mark.
- Through two games, Anhorn has five points, recording a goal and a team-best four assists.
- Krannila had a goal and an assist to total 70 career points (32 goals / 38 assists).
- The Huskies scored on the power play three times, converting 3-of-7 attempts while improving to 2-0-0 when scoring with a man-advantage. Last season, the nation's top power play unit was 16-7-2 when scoring on the power play.
- Senior forward Spencer Meier (Sartell, Minn.) scored a third period power play goal, his 10th career power play goal and 15th overall.
- Basse's 14-save shutout was the first Husky shutout at home since David Hrenak recorded a 14-save shutout against Miami on Jan. 22, 2022.
