No. 7 SCSU set for three-match homestand

Huskies host No. 6 Minnesota Duluth, Upper Iowa and Winona State this week at Halenbeck Hall
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 7 St. Cloud State Volleyball returns to Halenbeck Hall this week for three matches, hosting No. 6 Minnesota Duluth on Tuesday before tilts with Upper Iowa and Winona State on Friday and Saturday. Tuesday's match will begin at 6:00 p.m. CT with the weekend contests scheduled for 6:00 and 2:00 p.m. CT respectively.

Last Time Out
No. 4 St. Cloud State Volleyball dropped a five-set heartbreaker to No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State on Saturday evening in Marshall, losing a 2-1 lead in the match and a 14-11 advantage in the fifth set. Phebie Rossi delivered a career day for SCSU, terminating a career-high 27 kills on .458 hitting to go with two aces and four blocks. The senior middle blocker scored 32.0 points, leading all players. Kenzie Foley added 14 kills, four blocks and four digs while fellow outside Linsey Rachel kicked in 11 kills and five digs. Sam Zimmerman provided 10 kills on .318 hitting, leading SCSU with five blocks including three solo stuffs. Emma Berran directed the offense to 71 kills, dishing out a career-best 58 assists and adding eight digs. Keely Kurschner led the Huskies with 10 digs.

SCSU dropped three spots to No. 7 in this week's AVCA Top-25 poll, remaining in the Top-10 for the seventh straight week. The Huskies went 1-1 on the road last weekend at Sioux Falls and then-No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State, winning in four against the Cougars before dropping a heartbreaking five-setter in Marshall. Phebie Rossi averaged 4.11 kills/set on .411 hitting last weekend including a 27-kill, 32.0-point outburst against SMSU. The Huskies' defense faltered to a .241 opponent hitting percentage with just 9.22 digs/set on the weekend.
Scouting No. 6 Minnesota Duluth
Minnesota Duluth is 15-1 this season with a 7-1 mark in conference play, taking their lone loss to Wayne State. The Bulldogs have terminated 14.6 kills/set on .264 hitting, relying on a balanced attack to fuel their success. Each of their five hitters – Cianna Selbitschka (3.18), Sydney Lanoue (3.05), Samantha Paulsen (2.84), Grace Daak (2.44) and Hope Schjenken (2.35) each have put away north of 2.0 kills/set while the latter three are each hitting .306 or better. Madison Gordon (11.19 A/S) directs the offense while libero Kaylyn Madison (4.21 digs/set) anchors the Bulldog defense.
Scouting Upper Iowa
Upper Iowa has leaned on a stingy defense to open 2022 with a 10-5 mark, going 4-4 in NSIC play. The Peacocks average 17.0 digs/set while holding teams to hit just .151, allowing only 11.0 kills per set. Zoe Semelroth (2.91 K/S, .258) and Maggie Streightiff (2.32 K/S, .245) lead the offense while Kaci Beesecker (4.39 D/S) and Madelyn Rettler (3.57 D/S) quarterback the Upper Iowa defense. Both Beesecker and Rettler have posted .970 serve receive marks this season.
Scouting Winona State
2021 NSIC runner-up Winona State has bounced back from a shaky start to the 2022 season, winning four straight matches to enter the week 8-7, 4-4 in Northern Sun action. The Warrior defense averages 17.0 digs and 2.0 blocks per set, holding opponents to a .168 hitting percentage. Madison Larson (3.57 K/S, .259) and Sidney Paulson (3.21 K/S, .203) are the featured hitters for setter Jaci Winchell (9/98 A/S). Casey Volkmann (4.25 D/S) is the Winona State defensive anchor as the libero while Mikenna Joerger (1.27 B/S) leads the block.

Huskies can be found all over the NSIC leaderboards entering week seven. Kenzie Foley is second in the conference in points (5.07) and kills per set (4.34), ranks ninth in hitting percentage (.325) and 20th in aces/set (0.34). Emma Berran is third in the league in assists per set (11.12). Phebie Rossi is third in hitting percentage (.370) and ranks fourth in blocks/set (1.18) while landing sixth in points/set (3.88) and 13th in kills/set (3.10). Linsey Rachel lands 14th in kills/set (3.08), 16th in points/set (3.48) and hitting percentage (.280) while slotting in 19th in digs/set (3.19). Keely Kurschner is second in the NSIC in aces/set (0.52) – just one spot ahead of Emily Kern (0.46) – and ranks 10th in digs/set (3.90). She is 97 kills away from passing Kathy Davis (88') for second all-time in program history and just 15 digs away from passing Leah Herboldt (11') for fourth all-time.
Fear Foley
Junior outside Kenzie Foley ranks eighth in the NCAA in points/set (5.07) and is 16th in kills/set (4.34). She is second in the NSIC in both categories and is hitting .325, seventh in the nation among outside hitters and ninth overall in the Northern Sun. Foley has put away double-digit kills in 14 of 16 matches and has nine double-doubles this season.
Offensive Onslaught
St. Cloud State's offense is third in the NCAA in hitting percentage at .298. The Huskies rank fifth nationally in kills/set and are seventh in assists/set, leaning on their terminal offense to take 44 of 52 sets this season.
Dynamic Defense
The Huskies own the third-best defense in the Northern Sun entering the weekend, holding opponents to a .147 hitting percentage and have allowed the second-lowest kills/set mark at 10.19.
