Rachel provides 19-kill, 12-dig double-double while Rossi puts down 13 kills with nine blocks
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 7 St. Cloud State Volleyball received vintage performances from captains Linsey Rachel and Phebie Rossi in a four-set win over Winona State on Saturday afternoon.
Rachel double-doubled by putting down a season-high 19 kills along with 12 digs, adding a season-best four blocks while hitting .333. Rossi posted nine blocks for the third straight match to go with 13 kills and a career-high four aces.
The Huskies racked up 15.0 total blocks for the second straight night as Sam Zimmerman added six, Makena Hollman recorded four and Emma Berran posted three along with the combined 13 from Rossi and Rachel.
Kenzie Foley double-doubled with 10 kills and 13 digs, sharing the SCSU dig lead with Keely Kurschner.
Turning Point
After allowing Winona State to hit .455 and .250 in the first two sets respectively, the Huskies block locked in and held the Warriors to an atrocious 16-19-68 (-.044) over the final two frames. St. Cloud State likewise struggled offensively down the stretch but leaned on their defense to create points as they finished with seven aces, 15.0 total blocks and a 27 opponent attacking errors.
Quotables – St. Cloud State head coach Chad Braegelmann
"Winona's a tough team. They've been on a winning streak, having won five in a row entering the weekend. I'm proud of our effort – we played them in the conference championship match last year, a very talented team out there. Paulson and Larson give you all you can handle at the pins. Their middles are really good – I thought we did a really good job of neutralizing them today by serving tough and getting them more out of system.
"Our attackers did a great job of making adjustments. We got blocked a lot in the first set, and after that I felt we were much better. Our blocking was fantastic again today. I'm really proud of the work our women did with making hand adjustments, getting them uncomfortable with their attacking."
On Linsey Rachel's season-high 19 kills… "She did a great job being terminal. Her arm gets up high, she moves the ball around, doesn't just hit the same shot all the time. I though she used the block really well, so that was much better. Defensively she was good – the biggest piece was her great block touches. She had some slowdowns and some terminal blocks."
