
Future Husky Martins Lavins Named to Latvia National Junior Team

Martins to skate for Latvia at 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Future St. Cloud State Men's Hockey student-athlete Martins Lavins (Riga, Latvia) has been selected to the Latvia Junior National Team roster, as announced by Latvia on Dec. 18. The Cedar Rapids Roughriders (USHL) forward is one of 26 athletes who will represent Latvia at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship Dec. 26, 2022 – Jan. 5, 2023, in Moncton, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Lavins is the first Husky to be named to the Latvia Junior National Team. He will be one of three current/future Huskies set to skate at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship, joining sophomore defenseman Jack Peart (Grand Rapids, Minn.) on Team USA and Fargo Force forward Verner Miettinen (Espoo, Finland) on Team Finland.
In his second season with the Roughriders, Lavins has scored 11 points (four goals / seven assists) with two power play goals in 18 games. In 2021-22, Lavins recorded 15 points (four goals / 11 assists) in 50 games while helping Cedar Rapids advance to the playoffs. Lavins skated with Latvia at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he helped his home country advance to the quarterfinals. He has also skated with the Latvia U17, U18 and U20 teams.
