St. Cloud State University wrestling completed its 2021-22 season with a fourth place finish at the 2022 NCAA Division II championships, which were held at Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis on March 11-12.
The three-time defending national champions in 2018, 2019 and 2021, St. Cloud State charted 67.0 points to place fourth, while Nebraska Kearney won the team title this year with 127.0 points. Central Oklahoma (86.0 points) and West Liberty (75.5 points) rounded out the top four finishers and Adams State was fifth with 65.0 points.Â
A perennial national powerhouse in NCAA Division II wrestling, St. Cloud State has won NCAA team titles in 2021, 2019, 2018, 2016 and 2015. The Huskies have also posted nine top five team finishes at the NCAA tournament since 2011 under the direction of head coach Steve Costanzo.
SCSU was led by senior Garrett Vos with a second place finish in the 133 pound bracket at the 2022 NCAA tournament. Vos scored a 4-1 record at the NCAA tournament, which included a 7-3 win the semi-finals against Majid Corbett of Limestone. In the title bout, Vos lost on a fall at 2:25 against Jonathan Andreatta of Adams State.
Vos becomes the 11th Husky to earn All-America honors four times during his career and the first SCSU wrestler to four-peat as an All-American since James Pleski earned four awards from 2017 to 2020.  This marked the second consecutive season that Vos has finished as the NCAA runner-up at 133-pounds.
In addition, SCSU's Teacher and Joey Bianchini gained third place victories on March 12.
At 285 pounds, Teacher placed third with a 4-2 decision against Weston Hunt of Colorado Mines. To open his day on Saturday, Teacher lost a 3-1 match in sudden victory against Andrew Dunn of Kutztown in the tourney semifinals. He then battled back a 12-3 major decision victory over Joey Herrington of Nerbaska Kearney, which punched his ticket to the third place bout. Of note, Teacher was the NCAA champion at 285 pounds in 2021.
At 141 pounds, Bianchini fell in the semi-finals by a 4-3 score against Zeth Brower of Lander. In the consolation bracket, Bianchini charged back with a 12-0 major decision victory over Nick James of Nebraska Kearney before claiming third place with a 6-5 win over Tyler Warner of West Liberty. For Bianchini, this marked the second consecutive season that he has finished among the top three in the 141 pound bracket at the NCAA DII tournament.
In action at 157 pounds, Anthony Hererra capped a solid debut in the NCAA DII tournament with a fifth place finish. Hererra opened his day with a 5-4 loss to Baltazar Gonzalez of American International. He followed that with a 3-2 loss to Ryan Wheeler of Colorado Mesa, before ending his season on a high note with a 6-1 win over Noah Tarr of Davis-Elkins in the fifth place match.
SCSU's other Saturday wrestler was Noah Ryan at 197-pounds.  Ryan started things with a victory over Logan Kemp of West Liberty with a fall at 6:54. He then lost an 8-3 match against Nicholas Mason of Tiffin and then finished his day with a 6-4 loss in sudden victory to Gino Sita of Alderson Broaddus in the fifth place match. Â
Teacher, Vos, Bianchini, Hererra and Ryan all earned All-America status for their work at the NCAA Division II tournament in 2022. As mentioned before, Vos is a four-time All-American at SCSU. Ryan and Bianchini gained their third All-America awards at SCSU and Teacher is a two-time All-American for the the Huskies. A two-time NJCAA All-American before his transfer to SCSU, Hererra earned his first All-America award with SCSU this season.
