St. Cloud State is lone university to feature a nominee from each of its men’s & women’s teams
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – St. Cloud State Men's Hockey defenseman Spencer Meier (Sartell, Minn.) and Women's Hockey forward Addi Scribner (Woodbury, Minn.) have each been named 2023 Hockey Humanitarian Award nominees. The Husky pair are a part of a 15-player class, with SCSU as the lone school to feature a nominee from each of its men's and women's programs.
The Hockey Humanitarian Award, which is celebrating its 28th season, is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen — a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team but also to the community-at-large through leadership in volunteerism.
Meier, only the second-ever three-time captain in program history, has been an undisputed leader during his time at St. Cloud, leading the Huskies to three NCAA Tournament appearances (2019, 2021, 2022), a Penrose Cup championship (2019) and an NCAA Frozen Four and National Championship Game appearance (2021). Meier's impact extends much farther than his play on the ice, as he is an established figure in the central Minnesota community he grew up in. He volunteers his time to skate with youth hockey programs whenever his schedule allows, and routinely skates with the Minnesota Wild special hockey program on Sundays. Over this past summer, Meier hosted the first-ever Spencer Meier Hockey Camp, where approximately 70 kids from the Central Minnesota area came to St. Cloud to learn from Meier and his teammates.
In the classroom, Meier graduated with a degree in Business Finance in May 2022 and is currently taking classes towards an Elementary Education degree while maintaining a 3.4 GPA. He has earned four Academic All-NCHC honors, earning the distinction every year of his tenure with the Huskies (2018-19, 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22).
"It has been a joy to coach Spencer here at St. Cloud State," said Men's Hockey head coach Brett Larson. "His character in every situation imaginable and pride for his team, community and university make him a viable candidate for this honor. Whether it be on or off the ice, Spencer is a radiant leader, and was an easy choice to be voted a team captain by his teammates ahead of his junior season."
Scribner has helped transform the culture of St. Cloud State Women's Hockey since joining the program in 2020-21 as a transfer from Ohio State. Skating as both a forward and a defender in her career, the Woodbury, Minnesota product has stepped into a variety of roles on the ice depending on her team's needs. Her impact off the ice is felt on campus and in the greater central Minnesota community. Scribner volunteers her time with a variety of student enrichment and advocacy programs at St. Cloud State, leading her team's efforts to coordinate a presence at organizational events. She is also a reliable volunteer with youth hockey organizations, doing her part to grow the women's game and provide young girls with opportunities to learn the sport.
"I have truly enjoyed working with Addi Scribner throughout her career at St. Cloud State," said Women's Hockey associate head coach Jinelle Siergiej, "She is a hard-working, selfless individual who puts others before herself. After transferring to SCSU as a sophomore, Addi immediately got involved with our campus crew and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She always takes the freshmen on the team under her wing and helps them feel right at home – we are fortunate to have her as a leader and role model for youth hockey players around the area and throughout the state."
Finalists for the 2023 Hockey Humanitarian Award will be announced in February. The 2023 recipient will be announced on Friday, April 7 during the NCAA Men's Frozen Four weekend in Tampa, Florida.
Union College's Josh Kosack was honored as the 2022 Hockey Humanitarian Award recipient last year in Boston, Mass.
