LET'S GO POLLING
The Huskies enter week four ranked No. 14 in the country by the USCHO and landed No. 15 in the USA Hockey/The Rink Live poll. St. Cloud State is one of five WCHA programs featured in week four's rankings with one additional club receiving votes. The Huskies entered both the USCHO and USA Today National Polls in the first week of December last season, placing the team in the national rankings for the first time since 2009 and 2008 respectively. After debuting at No. 14 in both polls, SCSU proceeded to remain ranked in 10 of the next 11 weeks to close the year, closing the season ranked for the first time in program history at No. 12 by the USCHO and No. 13 by USA Today. Prior to 2022-23, SCSU had only appeared in the USA Today rankings five times while appearing in just six USCHO polls – last season, the Huskies were ranked 12 and 11 times respectively.
WEEKEND PROMOTIONS
Friday's opener celebrates Friday the 13th and looks ahead to Halloween with a "Spooky Night" theme as fans are encouraged to wear their best costume to the game. Saturday is Hockey Fights Cancer night in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month - the Huskies will use pink tape throughout the game.
THIS WEEK IN THE WCHA
Week four marks the start of conference action across the WCHA as the No. 14/15 Huskies host Bemidji State, No. 1 Wisconsin hosts (RV) Minnesota State and No. 2 Ohio State visits No. 6 Minnesota Duluth while No. 4 Minnesota and St. Thomas square off in St. Paul and Mendota Heights.
LAST TIME OUT
Senior goaltender Sanni Ahola recorded a 28 save shutout as the No. 12/13 Huskies (3-1-0, 0-0-0 WCHA) blanked Mercyhurst (3-3-0, 0-0-0 CHA) 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Mercyhurst Ice Center in Erie, Pennsylvania to earn a series split. Ahola earned her second consecutive shutout to open the year, turning away all 28 shots she faced including 17 in a frenetic second period. The Huskies netminder turned away a handful of odd-man rushes and played the puck well, earning her defense changes by being aggressive on the puck beyond the crease. Senior forward Emma Gentry scored the game's lone goal late in the opening period as St. Cloud State drew a pair of Mercyhurst penalties, earning a 5-on-3 advantage. Gentry peppered the Laker goaltender with chances at the high point as the Huskies moved the puck around the circles to space out the defense, creating a lane for the assistant captain to rifle in her third goal of the season. St. Cloud State's penalty kill turned away Laker power plays in the second and third as the defense rallied around Ahola. The SCSU tender stopped 17 shots in the second period as the Huskies struggled to possess the puck on the long change, adding eight more saves in the final frame. Junior defender Taylor Larson led the Huskies with three blocks on the defensive end.
SERIES HISTORY
The Huskies and Beavers have met 109 times since the all-time series began in 1999 with Bemidji State holding a 51-48-10 edge. SCSU swept the season series last year, outscoring Bemidji 9-2 with a pair of shutout wins.
SANNI TIME PART TWO
Senior goaltender Sanni Ahola was named the WCHA Goaltender of the Week following her shutout win over Mercyhurst on October 7. The honor is Ahola's second of the 2023-24 season and third of her career. Ahola earned her second consecutive shutout to open the year by blanking Mercyhurst 1-0 on Saturday, turning away all 28 shots she faced including 17 in a frenetic second period.
