SCSU Women’s Basketball Opens 2023-24 Season with a Dominant Home Win

Four Huskies reach double-digits in 77-43 win over Valley City State
ST. CLOUD, MINN. – St. Cloud State Women's Basketball (1-0, 0-0 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference) opened its 2023-24 season with near wire-to-wire 77-43 victory over Valley City State (2-2, 0-0 North Star Athletic Association) on Saturday Afternoon at Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud.
Sophomore forward Ashley Sawicki (Waunakee, Wis.) made her presence known early, recording six points and six rebounds in the first quarter alone. She would grab six more rebounds in the second quarter and finished the game with a game-high 13. Four Huskies – senior forward Dru Henning (Mukwonago, Wis.), senior guard Morgan Draheim (Hortonville, Wis.), sophomore guard Jada Eggebrecht (Phillips, Wis.) and freshman forward Paige Lambe (Verona, Wis.) scored double digit points, scoring 12, 10, 10 and 10 respectively. All 14 Huskies that suited up played in the game and 11 of them scored. The game only had two lead changes early in the game as SCSU led for 39:05 – all but 17 seconds in its dominating season-opening performance.

SCSU gets a week off before it plays the second game of its 2023-24 season. Next Saturday, Nov. 18, the Huskies travel to Kenosha, Wis. to play a nonconference game against UW-Parkside. - Henning led all players in scoring (12) and added two steals.
- Lambe scored double-digit points in her first collegiate game and was extremely efficient (4-5 from the field).
- Sawicki recorded a game-high 13 rebounds and added six points.
- Senior guard Tori Peschel (Sauk Centre, Minn.) stuffed the stat sheet, tallying eight points, six rebounds and four assists.
- The Huskies are now 11-1 all-time against Valley City State.
- SCSU led the game in field goal percentage (43.5%-30.2%), free throw percentage (66.7%-42.9%), field goals (30-16), free throws (10-3), total rebounds (16-33—49 - 5-22—27), assists (19-10), steals (12-6), blocks (2-1), points off turnovers (35-14), points in the paint (38-24), second chance points (9-2) and fast break points (16-4).
- VCSU led in three-point percentage (42.1%-38.9%) and three pointers (8-7).
- Each team had 31 points contributed from its bench.
- Four players (all freshman) – Lambe, forward Abigail O'Reilly (Elgin, Minn.), guard Grace Roesch (Sauk Rapids, Minn.) and guard Alana Zarneke (Appleton, Wis.) made their Huskies debuts.
- Eggebrecht has scored double-digit points in four consecutive times dating back to last year, her freshman campaign. She had scored 10+ points in 23 of her 28 games as a Husky.
- Peshcel picked up where she left off last year, stuffing the stat sheet with eight points, six rebounds and four assists. A season ago she averaged 3.9 points, 8.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game.
- Draheim opened her senior season by scoring double-digit points for the third time in her career.
- Sawicki grabbed double-digit rebounds for the first time in her career. She also set a new personal best for offensive rebounds in a game with seven, smashing her previous best of three which she did three times last year. She tied her record for defensive rebounds in a game with six, a feat she accomplished once before in her career.
- Lambe impressed in her first collegiate action, accumulating 10 points in just 11 minutes on 4-5 shooting from the field.
- Henning opened up her senior season by scoring double-digit points for the 11th time in her career.
- Guard Makenna Vanzant (Farmington, Ark.) opened her senior season by tying her record for three pointers made and attempted in a game (3-7).
- Sophomore guard Alyssa Stamer (Hutchinson, Minn.) recorded career-highs in points (three), rebounds (five) and assists (five).
- Sophomore forward Kora Forsline (Aurora, Minn.) set new single-game career-highs in minutes played (nine and rebounds (five).
- Sophomore forward Madi Herkenhoff (Albany, Minn.) recorded four points and four rebounds – both new single-game career highs.
- Zarneke played 14 minutes in her collegiate debut and scored four points.
- O'Reilly played six minutes and scored her first two points in her collegiate debut.
- Roesch played for seven minutes in her collegiate debut.
