RPI transfer and three-time ECAC All-Academic selection adds scoring to SCSU forward group
ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State Women's Hockey has announced the addition of RPI graduate transfer Maddy Peterson to their 2023 signing class. A forward from Princeton, Minnesota and Princeton High School, Peterson has been a top-three goal scorer during each of her three seasons at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Peterson joins the Huskies after scoring a career-high six goals on 33 shots – producing a stellar team-leading 18.2% shooting percentage – during her senior campaign at RPI, helping lead the Engineers to their best winning percentage since 2018-19. The forward ranked second among her teammates in goals and netted one on the power play, producing a pair of two-goal games over the course of her senior season.
"I am extremely excited to start this new journey with the St. Cloud State Huskies," said Peterson, "Being close to my hometown has always been a dream of mine, especially with such an amazing group of people. I am ready to join the hard work and determination this team has on and off the ice. I am grateful that I get the opportunity to help the Huskies show the WCHA and the NCAA how determined we are to win a championship."
The lefthanded shooter enjoyed a strong junior season in 2021-22, scoring five goals and providing three assists for eight points on 42 shots and an 11.9% shooting percentage. Her five goals ranked third on the club while her shooting percentage was top-five among her teammates. Peterson scored three goals as a freshman in 2019-20 – RPI did not compete during the 2020-21 season – to rank second on the team while putting 78 shots on goal, also second-most for RPI. Over her four-year and three-season career at RPI, Peterson skated in 90 games while providing 14 goals and three assists for 17 points. Two of her goals were scored against St. Cloud State with one at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Peterson will enroll in St. Cloud State's Criminal Justice graduate program. She is a three-time ECAC All-Academic honoree and completed her undergraduate degree in Psychological Science at RPI.
A 2019 graduate of Princeton High School, Peterson was a five-year standout for the Tigers while earning four All-Mississippi 8 Conference honors and twice attending USA National Camps. The four-time Team MVP and two-year captain established Princeton's career goals record and led the Tigers to two Conference Championships, scoring 134 goals and adding 89 assists for 223 points across 125 games played. Peterson earned Mississippi 8 All-Academic honors and twice was named to the MSHSL State All-Academic team. She also played three years of soccer, helping Princeton advance to the Class A MSHSL Tournament Semifinals.
Maddy is the daughter of Gary and Terry Peterson.
